Apple Adds More Storage To iPhone And iPod Touch: Getting Closer To That Sweet Spot
When Apple moves from “getting closer” to “close” it means I’ll finally pony up for either an iPhone or an iPod Touch.
The storage space on the iPod Touch is very welcome. My current iPod is an iPod Video with 30 GB storage, so the 32 GB on the Touch is at last, equivalent. The battery is starting to fade on my iPod Video, and I realized during my video rental test that the older iPods won’t display the movie rentals. So most likely, this year I’ll do the inevitable upgrade to the latest iPod.
But if I’m going to get a Touch, I should consider the iPhone, and on that front, I think the rumored “2.0″ model will have more appeal than an iPod Touch. A 3G iPhone is nearly a given this year, and AT&T is building out its 3G network, meaning faster Internet access. I’m thinking this iPhone 2.0 will appear in the later half of the year, and (fingers crossed) - and a higher end model will be bumped to 32 GB.
So that’s my sweet spot: 3G iPhone 2.0 with 32 GB. With that amount of storage, it will completely replace my iPod.
Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.

I’ve already jumped on an iPhone, but I agree that a 32 GB 3G will be enough to make me jump again. The 16GB option didn’t do much for me, since I don’t really use my iPhone as my primary iPod, anyway. Just for the occasional video on a flight, since the screen is so much better than on my Classic.
I’m not positive that Apple will put 32 GB into the first 3G iPhone, though. Seems like that would bump the price up a little too much and cannibalize Touch sales a bit much, too. I expect a 64GB Touch by the Holiday shopping season, though, so maybe a 32 GB iPhone would fit in there. Who knows? Either way, Apple’s going to get more of my money before year’s end, as always.
Yep I’m kind of making a guess based on the current trends and my ideal iPhone. Not sure if I can wait until 2009 either. The safe bet would say, 3G iPhone at 16 GB but I like to have a little bit of drool saved up. Especially since we now have 32 GB in the iPod Touch.
As they say bigger is better
