Dual Monitor Action

January 28th, 2008

I don’t write about the “day job” as a general blog policy, but today, a bunch of us web monkeys got our monitors upgraded, and by luck of the draw I now have two Dell 20 inch monitors. With each at 1600 x 1200, I can fit two pages side by side on one monitor, and the combined real estate - well it’s basically like looking at a 40″ television - except I’m only sitting about a foot away. Although I had a dual monitor set up before, I now feel like I got a third monitor out of the deal.

So basically, while I’m glad to have gotten this upgrade, I rather wonder if it’s overkill. It’s not like I’m a day trader or anything…

What kind of crazy monitor set up do you fellow nerds have? I only have one monitor at home.

Thanks for the plug! Two monitors with 1800 x 1600 resolution is definitely getting a 3rd out of the deal no doubt. You must have a pretty intense graphics card to run them that high!

Yep - I do wander onto your site from time to time and thought of the crazy multi monitor day trading set ups when I got it going :) I think the graphics card is maxed out right now.

I have a dual CRT setup 19″ & 17″ and even though I would never want to go back to a single monitor setup under any conditions I would love to be able to swap up to even 2 19″ LCD monitors.

That would be heaven for me :)

Nice, a 19 + 17 is definitely luxurious. Right now I just have one 19″ at home which is starting to feel a bit small already just after one day.

I thought of another multi monitor glamour pic: Al Gore

Typical guy post, talking about how many inches they got ;-P

Sadly, it sounds like y’all got me beat unless I cheat and hook up the laptop to the hdtv. When I’m working from home though I’ll have both my computers going 20″ on the desktop and 15″ laptop (I dunno why, I like having 2 machines going). Sometimes I’ll also fire up a portable dvd player (8″ baby!) so that I don’t have to take up valuable computer screen real estate to run a movie on the side.

But no fancy dual monitor setup off of one machine. I’m just not that advanced, but with lcd prices being what they are at least the multi-monitor setup is more affordable than ever.

Jase you gotta go triple screen for the flight sims!

haha … well the picture for the “triple head” has a Matrox device - I was checking out the DualHead2Go just last night, as I realized my Mac Mini can’t power two monitors without some help. Somehow having two of the exact same monitor makes this seem more awesome.

I thought of another guy with a two 30 inch dell monitors - Chris Pirillo. He does a good job selling the dual monitor action vs. one large monitor with this post. here’s a video where you can see his setup.
