MacWorld 2008 Apple Rumor Round Up: There’s Something In The Air 1/11/08

January 11th, 2008

First MacWorld Apple banner: “There’s Something In The Air.” Sneaking around Moscone center at this time of year can reveal Apple ad campaigns which usually make no sense until the product is revealed. This slogan is no different. Possibilities: AirPort, streaming content to AppleTV, the iPhone, WiMAX? Who knows.

Marketing Apple has an interesting thought that the slogan might mean wireless monitors and computers. Just imagine if that detachable monitor were also a tablet PC.

But AppleInsider spoils the speculation and says no iTablet…because it’s just not ready.

Cringley thinks Apple will buy Adobe sometime in 2008.

BusinessWeek discusses a 2 - 1 Apple stock split and a Slingbox client for the iPhone.

On the last weekend before MacWorld, sometimes leaked product photos emerge, so I’m keeping my antennae up.

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.

I’m not thinking WiMax, but “There’s something in the air” could refer to the ultra portable (and maybe even the whole MacBook Pro lineup) getting some sort of ubiquitous Web access. Maybe a combination of WiFi and 3G, so that you’d almost always be able to connect on the road. It would be truly remarkable if that 3G access were free, like it is on the Kindle. Combine that with Back to My Mac, and suddenly not having a hard drive wouldn’t be so bad. Leave the big files at home. Sync PDA/type data automatically and wirelessly with your home computer in the background. Stream everything else.

Or maybe Apple will just be giving all its iPhone and portable Mac customers free access to all of AT&Ts WiFi spots. That would be nice, too.

Or maybe it’s something completely different. I do love how those banners tend to spark all the last-minute crazy rumors every year.

Hmmm, so what you imagine might be - you have a TV show loaded up in iTunes on your home computer, and it could wirelssly stream to your iPhone or iPod Touch. That would be amusing over a home network, but would be really awesome if you could be on the road!

Or maybe it’s the MacBook Air, the MacBook so thin you can fold it into a paper airplane.
