Aziza

December 5th, 2007

FoodWhile the folks were in town we had a scrumptious dinner at Aziza, a Moroccan / California eatery in the Richmond district of San Francisco. Amusing story: we actually wanted to go to El Mansour but couldn’t remember that restaurant’s name, recalling the restaurant as “some Moroccan place in the Richmond.” Therefore, we made reservations at Aziza and despite a bit of consternation at where the belly dancers and rose water were - and the realization we were at the wrong Moroccan restaurant - we focused on the food, and weren’t disappointed.

Aziza serves up Moroccan cuisine modernized with the whole California organic, fresh ingredient thing and a good dose of invention. We did the tasting menu which consists of four courses. The soup and appetizers (flat bread and unusual spreads) were plenty, so by the time the “bastilla” saffron chicken in phyllo came ’round, I was already satisfied. The deserts were also really tasty, and drinks are exotic cocktails and an extensive European (several Belgian) beer selection.

The only down side is I think the mega-meal was a bit too brutal (too much of a good thing) so we ended up taking our desserts home. Be prepared to eat, eat, eat if you get the group dining option.

If your heart is set on the Morrocan belly dancer pile of couscous with your fingers deal, you may want to check out El Mansour instead. But in our case, this was one rare time where we were totally happy we ended up at the wrong restaurant.

Hehe, you should give me a ring next time I can give you the 411 on where places are. But in this case you are fortunate to have stumbled upon Aziza. Excellent restaurant.

FWIW, Aziza has routinely been in SF Gates annual Top 100 Bay Area Restaurants for the last several years: http://www.sfgate.com/food/top100/2007/

They’ve definitely gone more fusion-y in the last couple of years. My first time there, several years ago, they still did the rose water ritual and had a room in the back where you could sit on cushions and stuff. I had also read some reviews a while back on yelp that basically said the belly dancers at Aziza were “hotter’ than those at other Moroccan places in the city. I seem to recall the Aziza belly dancer we saw was quite easy on the eyes. However, on our last two visits, there was no belly dancing, so I wonder if they’ve dispensed with that too.

Oh and the desserts are kick-@ss. I still remember this lemon-basil gelato/crepe thing I had. I don’t even like lemon-based desserts, but the waitress recommended it and she didn’t let me down. I still remember how tasty that dessert was to this day.
