Sushi Sam’s
San Mateo (where we live) has a handful of pretty good Japanese restaurants, and probably the best known is Sushi Sam’s. We don’t go there too often as it tends to be really crowded with a fair wait. But last night we took the chance and as usual, I left satisfied.
The best thing to get is the sushi and Sushi Sam’s hits the marks I look for in regards to good sushi, fresh, large pieces of fish, small hand-shaped clump of rice. The extra bits that a lot of places skimp on are fresh - namely the ginger, wasabi, nori, and even the cucumber in the kappa maki.
The decor is really simple, and the joint is always crowded and on the noisy side. Nothing fancy about it, but they have the goods.
Anyhow, there’s not much more to say about a decent sushi place except to recommend it. It of course isn’t on the level of the sushi I had in Japan at the Tsukiji fish market, but for San Mateo, California, it’s excellent.
