Apple To Open Up The iPhone Come February
Hmm, this is a bit of a surprise but something that will ultimately good for iPhone. Steve Jobs himself posted a note on the Apple website saying they’re working on an official SDK that will be released in February. It will allow developers to create apps for iPhone as well as iPod Touch.
We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs. We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.
This removes one annoyance among the geek crowd that Apple was developing a closed system that would hamper iPhone adoption in the long run. However, I still think the intially closed iPhone was necessary to get the bugs worked out and provide the best user experience to drive intial sales.
With each Apple move the iPhone becomes the perfect cell phone (if it wasn’t already). I still have my personal annoyance with AT&T being the sole carrier, but this iPhone SDK move shows that things can change quickly, as it always does with technology.
Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
