Stangelini’s Italian Deli
A few weekends ago we walked to the Burlingame Farmer’s Market (ought to make that a regular activity) and on the way back, stopped by Stangelini’s Italian Deli which is a few blocks away from our apartment. It’s a pretty retro Italian corner store, but they do make some killer sandwiches and a homemade lasagna.
I do think their homemade pasta sauce is on the salty side, but the sandwiches are really good if you get the right combination of ingredients. Personally, I’d avoid the “specialty” sandwiches - many of which include grilled chicken breast - and just stick with the traditional deli meats.
On this particular day my wife and I split a sliced turkey breast with cranberry sauce, dijon mustard, on dutch crunch and it was pretty excellent. We usually split one sandwich - I can’t imagine someone actually able to eat a whole one by themselves without causing a hernia.
For San Mateo it’s pretty excellent. Still, I am a bit spoiled as I work near North Beach where I can get a classic sandwich at Palermos or a standard decent gut-buster at Freddies. I’ll write about those joints in the future.
