OR EMAILGoogle Very Well Could Achieve Social Network Domination
Today, TechCrunch reports on some secret meeting where Google has something “really really big” in the works to take Facebook on head to head. Sounds kinda sneaky and strange (and a little Dr. Evil) but this is Silicon Valley.
Although Facebook is totally entrenched and many folks believe they will win the social networking race with their “Facebook platform” and associated widget-mania - I still think Google could pull of a coup and come up with something better.
For starters, this Wednesday I came to the realization that I’m constantly checking either GMail or Google Reader, and just out of convenience, also GTalk. It’s becoming the best way to reach me.
Then at TechCrunch 40 we saw Xobni, demonstrating how a plug-in over email could be a really awesome application. GigaOm wonders if email could be the ultimate social network. And Google got me to use GTalk by incorporating it into GMail.
I’ve gotten to regular use of GMail, GTalk, and Google Reader without even intending to - or realizing it.
I could imagine Google adding “social network” features onto Google Reader. They could integrate Google Reader and GMail. How about a way to see what other contacts in your GMail thought about the stories you’re checking out?
One big reason why I think this will work - is because Google already has its hooks in me. The main reason why I’ve been so down on Yahoo! Mash and Digg’s recent social network pushes is because I loathe having to redefine myself in a new user profile.
Google already has a good handle on me and my contacts. They even spider this blog regularly (*shudder*) which is my ultimate user profile.
Anyhow, I’m pretty sure Google is going to come out with something that ties these parts together - including their unused social network Orkut - and blows people away with how brain-dead simple it all works.
Lastly, if nothing else works, I figure Google will just buy Facebook (their stock just hit a new high). And despite Facebook’s insistence that they’re not for sale, everyone has their price - and I’m sure Google would just whip out something that made YouTube looks like pocket change.
