Yahoo! Mash
September 16th, 2007

I spent a few minutes messing about with Yahoo! Mash, a new social network (thanks to the omnipresent cat fiend Engtech). I essentially agree with what’s already been said, but here are some brief notes:
- Yahoo! didn’t buy Facebook and this social-profile-module stuff is so Facebook-like it’s practically an admission of guilt.
- All the captive Yahoo! ID users (myself included) have instant profiles just waiting to be created and populated. Just think Flickr and MyBlogLog and Yahoo! Groups and everything else.
- Mash is just dying for MyBlogLog integration - looks like they have a “module” in the works called “MyMashLog”.
- Very Microsoft-esque to rename “Twitter” to “Blurt”.
- The Yahoo! My Avatar creator area is cornball, but fun. How about a Yahoo! My Avatar Comic Book Creator for unintentionally surreal hilarity.
- I figured out how to add a module that basically pulls in this blog’s feed.
- That whole invite-automatagically-creating-a-profile thing is… amusing. A very Spock-like tactic.
Despite my amusement, I’m very social-networked out. I was struck by this whole experience that if you have a good Web 2.0 community going, it seems the most obvious thing to do is leverage all that user data and emphasize the profiles. So now we have Spock and Squidoo in addition to the standards Facebook and MySpace.
What’s annoying is I’m starting to feel schizophrenic - unfinished aspects of my personality hanging out as different pieces across the Web 2.0 space. And the more additions to this space, the more fragmented things will be - providing an opportunity for some company to come in and try to put the people back together - (a social network profile aggregator) - or folks should just create blogs - this blog is the most accurate profile of my so-called-life.
For what it’s worth, here’s my page at Yahoo! Mash and if you want an invite let me know in the comments below. If you fill out the email field I can go from there.
