Blog Paranoia And Constipation

September 14th, 2007

Apologies for the slight slowdown in posting — a case of “blog paranoia” and a few balls in the air made it a little hard to post this week.

Blog paranoia:

The result of this phase (which I predict will pass as soon as this day is over) is I have about twenty posts in various stages of completion that for one minor reason or another I haven’t been able to finish. I come up with an idea for a new post but then feel bad that I haven’t finished any of these old ones, and well, end up not posting anything.

I think I just need some ice cream.

Then I plan to get these twenty odd posts unplugged over the weekend.

  1. Oh man Jason I can relate with those feeleings exactly but I have found that some judious use of a couple of admion tools for WP help dealing with spamming and referrer spam

I just added Spam Poison (http://english-107581561904.spampoison.com/) which I have found to be really good.

Angsuman’s Referrer Bouncer (http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/word-press-1–5-plugin-referer-bouncer/) with a maintain server side text file — which if you want I can shoot you a copy of mine

And finally FireStats as the stats plugin … even though I still have a bit of a problem with how he presents the Daily visitor counts (he uses a rolling 24hr period) but it is in constant dev and more than willing to listen to suggestion and I know he has some good stuff coming up. But as part of the settings you can add to both the Bot list and IP’s that show up as doiing nothing more than scanning for whatever reason.

As for the random visitor “this place sucks” feeling I feel that all the time but unfortunately there is no plugin to help with this.

Hmm looks like I’ll give the Angsuman’s plug in a try and see how that goes. I suppose the text file is a list of common spammer ips.

I submitted your Gilmore Game to stumbleupon… not sure if that accounts for the weird traffic.

  5. the list for the referrer plugin is one you create after installing the plugin .. the instructions are a little convoluted but basically once you have installed the plugin you have it create a base referrer.txt file that you can then add to. I add to mine contiually which is why offered a copy because it might give you a bit of a jump start.

I know how you feel, but yeah, ice cream solves everything :) Enjoy the traffic, no matter its source…

    Hi Jason

Boy can I relate to your feelings personally I think chocolate not icecream is the answer. My blogging has been totally off all week — to the point my blog license has been revoked. Which I need to get back because they have created the Sue Waters Challenge .

My thought is writing some more on Ghost Rider and Nicholas Cage that was popular ROFL. And my personal solutions is I am going to write a series of posts for the week to get back my focus.

Well I’m feeling slightly less paranoid. I installed the Angsuman plug in — now I just have to start on a list — and I also did some of these tips for WordPress blog security from Simplehelp.

I didn’t have any ice cream yet; maybe that will be the reward.

  9. That’s funny. I get paranoid too. I think there’s something about diarists and personal bloggers, that we tend to get paranoid… Makes us easy targets for evil-doers. I try to stay rational but some times it’s hard…

I had some chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup. That helped immensely.

I can relate. I actually get shocked when someone clicks on my adverts, because it seems to be a rarity. I think people get so used to seeing Adsense that they filter it out.

However, I always make a point to check out the sponsors of other bloggers. It just seems polite, and I’m hoping it’ll build some good bloggy-karma.

But yes, ice cream will help. I tend to go for Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, but that’s for real emergencies. :)
