General Webomatica Update
Every few weeks, I do a quick assessment of the general direction this blog is headed. I’m quite satisfied with its current progress and everything above and beyond recently has been icing on the cake. However, there are still some areas for improvement.
The good:
- August was decent in terms of traffic - 33K uniques. The pace of increase has slowed, but is still trending up. Back in February was the last time I hit the front page of Digg (I think I had 40K unique visitors that month). I hope to exceed that amount of traffic without any Digg activity by year’s end - we’ll see.
- Both Google AdSense and writing for the Blog Herald have been really cool experiences. I’m considering adding TextLink Ads and another writing project (more about that later).
- The “long tail” has been a saving grace. I’ve written many movie, music, and television reviews that generate traffic long after I’ve forgotten about them. Technology posts are fun to write, but ultimately rather time sensitive.
- The So Bad It’s Good Movie contest was loads of fun, and I’m thinking about running a third contest soon. I just have to come up with a good concept and prize (any fun ideas?).
The bad:
- My Technorati rank has decreased. I guess I’m not writing as much link-worthy content.
- I haven’t been writing as many music reviews as of late. I think I need another obsessive “every song by so-and-so” list (any suggestions for an artist?)
- I hit a production wall in regards to the bottle cap site. I had a whole bunch of stuff planned which I just haven’t found the time to get to.
- I should write more funny posts.
So that’s about it. I keep finding reasons to persevere and as I’ve mentioned before, comments and reading other blogs are my main inspiration these days.

Technorati rank fluctuates a lot so you don’t need to worry about that. Thanks for keeping us updated though, really appreciate it.
Congrats on your progress. 33k uniques is quite impressive.
What ever happened to the webomati-comics? I’d love to see more of those.
Also, it’s kinda ridiculous, but I’d love to see a music series on some heavy metal milestones or something. I was listening to some metal in the iTunes library the other day and it was cracking me up. I wonder if the long predicted resurgence is happening yet?
I think another fun idea would be to take a single date in time (maybe September 15th) and review the Billboard Top 5 songs from 2007, 1997, 1987, 1977 and 1967…I’d love to see which decade would come out on top as well as some observations about differences or similarities in the style and subject matter of this small decade-by-decade sampling.
Dave you must be psychic - I have an eighties “hair metal post” (slated for tomorrow) that you’ll probably find amusing.
The music decade idea is an excellent one. I’ll have to do some research.
Don’t worry about contest prizes.
Having you watch all the crappy movies we suggested was prize enough
eng, if it’s making me do strange things, maybe I should make good on a suggestion to eat all the items on the Taco Bell menu and write about them…
Yeah what the hell happened to that poll? I wanted to see you review all the Taco Bell items. I’m the jerk that added it!
If it’s easier on your stomach, just to the taco bell value menu. It’s worth knowing what the best value item any fast food menu is (doesn’t McDonalds also have a value menu?).
Sounds like a Morgan Spurlock type (Super Size Me) experiement where I eat junk food. Hmmm.
33k Uniques is crazy. Keep up the great work.
