Apple Event: New iPod Nanos, iPods, iPod Touch

At today’s Special Apple Event, the ever-mesmerizing Mr. Jobs announced new iPod Nanos, iPods, an iPod Touch, and an iPhone price drop.
The leaked spy photographs of the iPod Nano proved accurate — this is the “fat Nano” that many people thought looked odd. I think the thinness and how Apple products look better in the flesh will hold true, but I’m honestly not too excited about the new Nano colors or capabilities.
But the iPod Touch is cool — it’s basically an iPhone without the phone. It has WiFi, which is more technology than I expected.
Unfortunately, I have to say I won’t be getting an iPod Touch. Despite all the cool additions to the GUI, the touch interface, the web browsing, the bigger screen, the price, and WiFi… the storage capacity bugs me: 8 or 16 GB.
It’s hard to imagine going back from having my entire music library on an iPod to having to pick and choose. Especially when the iPod Touch has the biggest iPod screen ever, making it ideal for watching videos. I’d love to load a whole season of a particular television show on an iPod Touch, but it won’t fit.
Then please note that the 8 GB iPhone dropped to $399. Just a hundred bucks more than the iPod touch with the same storage capacity and you get the phone (well, plus a contract with AT&T).
Yes, it’s pretty nit picky but if the iPod Touch had a 40GB hard drive, I would have run out and bought it this weekend. But as it is, I guess I’ll be waiting for a future iteration with more storage.
Still, I’m sure the iPod Touch will sell tons of units to people who already have a Nano (and therefore not used to the larger storage space) or people who can’t afford the iPhone and its cellular contract with AT&T. And ultimately, does a slight misfire really matter in the larger scheme of things? People who might have wanted the iPod Touch with bigger capacity will just buy an iPod Classic or be upsold to the iPhone — I’m now seriously considering the iPhone.
Apple just sells scads more iPods, iPhones, and iEverything and other companies sit around staring at their Zunes and television shows on Unbox, playing catch-up.
Update: You may be able to get a 4 GB iPhone while supplies last for $299.
I just did a “Get Info” on two folders.
30 Rock season 1 — 5.23 GB.
Lost season 3 — 11.51 GB.
Both were purchased through iTunes. Thought you’d like to know!
Well, if I deleted my 30 GB music library and only had the season on the iPod Touch, it would would fit
That’s what bugs me too. Ah well. I bet it will come out eventually.
Yep — either the price of flash RAM will fall enough, or they’ll add a hard drive.
Apple’s really starting to piss me off. They’re releasing two products that by themselves are “ok” but if you combined them would be awesome.
What they should do is get a flash HD (30-60GB) and combine that with the Apple Touch. There you have the best of both worlds. Yes, it would be more expensive but I honestly think people would buy it. 16GBs is nothing.
Yeah my thoughts as well — I just left a comment on my Early Adopter post — I would have liked to have seen an iPod Touch with 40GB for $499 and an iPhone with 40 GB for $599.
i agree to McKerlie — why not apple merge its products to give more and better features
my opinion will be that they should come out with an ipod touch bigger than 40gb i think they should go out to an 60 or 80gb like the ipod classic that now they come agian but the 160gb ipod thats crazy i got my 80gb ipod which i bouth like 4 months ago for the same price of the 160gb. that sucks. in the ipod touch they should come with a bigger capcity. my question is that why do they have to way to come out the bigger capacity. thats crazy. i want them to come out with at least 60gb or 80gb as soon as possible.
