Apple Event: New iPod Nanos, iPods, iPod Touch

iPod Touch

AppleAt today’s Special Apple Event, the ever-mesmerizing Mr. Jobs announced new iPod Nanos, iPods, an iPod Touch, and an iPhone price drop.

The leaked spy photographs of the iPod Nano proved accurate - this is the “fat Nano” that many people thought looked odd. I think the thinness and how Apple products look better in the flesh will hold true, but I’m honestly not too excited about the new Nano colors or capabilities.

But the iPod Touch is cool - it’s basically an iPhone without the phone. It has WiFi, which is more technology than I expected.

Unfortunately, I have to say I won’t be getting an iPod Touch. Despite all the cool additions to the GUI, the touch interface, the web browsing, the bigger screen, the price, and WiFi… the storage capacity bugs me: 8 or 16 GB.

It’s hard to imagine going back from having my entire music library on an iPod to having to pick and choose. Especially when the iPod Touch has the biggest iPod screen ever, making it ideal for watching videos. I’d love to load a whole season of a particular television show on an iPod Touch, but it won’t fit.

Then please note that the 8 GB iPhone dropped to $399. Just a hundred bucks more than the iPod touch with the same storage capacity and you get the phone (well, plus a contract with AT&T).

Yes, it’s pretty nit picky but if the iPod Touch had a 40GB hard drive, I would have run out and bought it this weekend. But as it is, I guess I’ll be waiting for a future iteration with more storage.

Still, I’m sure the iPod Touch will sell tons of units to people who already have a Nano (and therefore not used to the larger storage space) or people who can’t afford the iPhone and its cellular contract with AT&T. And ultimately, does a slight misfire really matter in the larger scheme of things? People who might have wanted the iPod Touch with bigger capacity will just buy an iPod Classic or be upsold to the iPhone - I’m now seriously considering the iPhone.

Apple just sells scads more iPods, iPhones, and iEverything and other companies sit around staring at their Zunes and television shows on Unbox, playing catch-up.

Update: You may be able to get a 4 GB iPhone while supplies last for $299.

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
