NBC Goes With Amazon Unbox, Which Doesn’t Support The Mac Or iPod

Oh well, so much for NBC. It looks like they have found a replacement for Apple’s iTunes Music Store: Amazon Unbox.

Amazon Unbox doesn’t support the Mac.

It also doesn’t support the iPod.

As a Mac user, this means I will be completely unable to purchase or watch any NBC digital downloads via Amazon. Thanks for making my decision on what fall shows to watch and write about on this blog so easy, NBC!

  • They also just made the decision for a lot of their audience for how the content will be "procured". And no, it's not the "Unbox" platform that I'd expect those iPodders to be using...

    Gotta love old media. It's kind of fun to watch, in a painful way.
  • Yep... the more I think about this, it's really annoying. Apple managed to get me to *pay* for television show downloads, which I'd never done before. This is a step backwards because it's tempting me to do the opposite.
  • I understand what NBC is trying to accomplish but I can't help but think they're going to fail miserably. (and for that matter anyone who tries to dethrone the iTunes store kingdom) Even though I'm a Mac user I went to Amazon to see how the NBC content would be presented along with all the other Unbox content. It's horrible. The user experience is so lacking, stilted, and inconvenient compared to the itunes store experience not to mention it doesn't have the built in synergy that Apple is able to create for the most popular consumer appliance in history. I can't help but think that this is really big deal. The "experience" is what has made Apple so successful.
    I'm all for alternatives but Amazon's distribution of downloadable content such as this doesn't seem hold a candle to Apple's at this point. (and I think NBC's sales will suffer for it.)
  • Mark I totally agree - one part of Apple's success with the iPod (that I think is overlooked) is the software of iTunes. Since Amazon Unbox is incompatible with Mac it's a moot point but I also tried to set up the ABC TV client and it never installed. I'll have to try again but with the convenience of buying TV shows in iTunes with one click I seriously wonder why I bother. I know it will work on my Mac and I can push it to the iPod and not have to deal with frustration or new DRM hassles.

    Well that sucks. No Heroes. No Chuck. Guess the only option is to wait for the DVDs to come out in a year or so.

    It's really pathetic -- the alienation of mac users in such an obvious way! NBC is really doing an injustice to its viewers... esp when it WAS one of my preferred networks. I am also a big House fan and apparently even though it is a FOX show it is affected by this whole mess. One thing's for sure, I won't be getting rid off my mac or my ipod, but I guess it's goodbye to NBC for me!

    Mac user here. Got screwed by SciFi channel, and now it looks like NBC as well.
