Bombay Ice Creamery

September 4th, 2007

FoodSo… once again I don’t usually write about food, but this past weekend we visited one of my vices of San Francisco: Indian ice cream. More specifically, there’s a hole-in-the-wall type joint near 16th and Valencia in the Mission called “Bombay Ice Creamery“.

It’s ice cream, but coming at you with strange flavors such as cardamom, ginger, pink banana, and saffron rose. I got up the guts to try “chiku” which is some sort of fruit, that to me tasted like cocoa, coconut, coffee, and strawberry. There’s a funky blue flavor called “Star War” that I’ll have to try someday.

My personal favorite so far is definitely cardamom, which is a hard to describe flavor of malt, licorice, and cinnamon. The ice cream is white with little black flecks not unlike vanilla, but the taste is unique, and I’ve only found it at this particular ice cream store. Although, I suppose I could probably whip up a batch.

Pretty much any time we hit the Mission I get the craving for this Indian ice cream. It’s a great treat after a spicy carne asada burrito; that’s for sure.
