The IT Crowd: The Work Outing

Season 2, Episode 1

The IT Crowd: The Work Outing

This British television series The IT Crowd is pretty darned hilarious – I’ve watched season one and they just started season two.

The writer was responsible for Father Ted which was really funny, but The IT Crowd has the added layer of nerds in an IT department (Moss, Roy, and their boss Jen), and the humor has a rougher edge. However this first episode was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while.

Basically the three IT coworkers somehow end up going to a musical that manages to be very – well – there’s a pun in the title “outing”. Eventually things breaks down into the two IT folks unable to use the bathroom and Roy having to pretend that he’s handicapped. A few running jokes created some laugh-out-loud moments for me.

It follows that old pattern of a white lie getting progressively worse until nothing can be helped, Fawlty Towers style. What’s really terrible is when the situation involves lying to your boss – who looks a bit like a man – ah, you’ll have to watch it. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re a fan of British humor.

  • Excellent...I'm gonna procure this one for viewing. Sounds excellent!

I love how many of these British programs have shorter length seasons. Makes it easy to catch up if you missed the first season.
  • Yes - "procure" is a good word as it isn't out on DVD in the states. I was able to find some streaming options etc. by digging around. An American DVD of the first season should be coming out early next year and I'm planning on buying it.
  • I started season 1 and watched the first 2 eps. It's pretty amusing, though the humor is a bit more direct and in-your-face than something like the UK Office (which I find more subtle and profound). Surprisingly reminds me a bit more of a U.S. sitcom than a British show in some ways with the prominent physical humor and blunt (but funny) jokes.

Still, it's worth watching. Moss cracks me up. The hair and the voice are spot-on. Loved the way he deals with the fire in episode 2 (series 1).

I read on Wikipedia that NBC picked up the rights to do a U.S. version. Supposedly it's slated to air midseason in 2008. As always, I'm a skeptic with the remakes, but as the U.S. version of The Office proved, it is possible to do it right.
  • Yeah it's definitely more blunt and a bit surreal at times. I must say the episodes get better as they go along - I like the Goth guy and that first episode of Season 2 - man I might watch it again.
  • John
Dave - so it's not as long as some TV series?
  • John, I should've clarified. Like the UK version of The Office, the IT Crowd consists (so far) of two 6-episode seasons. So unlike some US series with 22-24 episodes, it's fairly easy to "catch up" season-wise ;-)
