Setting Up The Mac Mini
The Mac Mini set up has been so far, so good, and less work than I predicted. Apple has a great tool called the Migration Assistant, which walks you through some steps. You basically hook up your new Mac to the old one with a Firewire cable, boot the old Mac into target disk mode, indicate which user account to transfer over, and it copies everything over - applications, documents, and even network preferences.
The transfer worked like a charm. I was most concerned about my iTunes music and digital photos, but they both came over intact, even with the version of iPhoto being newer on the Mac Mini.
Just a few minor glitches: I ended up with two administrator accounts on the Mac Mini. I deleted the new one. It also copied over Classic which doesn’t run on the Mac Mini (deleted that too). The last item is that the monitor is sitting a bit too low, so I definitely need to get a monitor stand.
So far, I’m really enjoying the Mac Mini. It runs fast enough for pretty much everything we do and wasn’t super expensive. I really hope those rumors of it being discontinued are untrue.
Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.

The mini is an awesome little computer. No one but Apple really knows how well (or poorly) it sells. Apple never discloses sales figures on minis alone; it only reports mini sales as part of the “consumer desktop” category, which also includes the iMac. This understandably makes people suspicious.
Even if it’s not a huge seller, though, I hope Apple doesn’t do away with it. It may not be inspiring scores of Windows users to “try a Mac” as it was originally intended, but it does inspire an awful lot of Mac users I know to “get another Mac” to use as a media server, desktop counterpart to a laptop, etc. It’s hard to say no to a fully-functional computer that almost costs less than an iPhone.
Agreed… I think one way apple could nuke the Mac Mini and still keep me satisfied is to combine it into a future, more powerful iteration of the Apple TV.
[...] Earlier I mentioned the need for a monitor stand due to setting up the Mac Mini. I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking for - something that would raise up the monitor but allow some space beneath for the diminutive computer. [...]
I have no idea why people who are willing to buy the apple TV do not consider the mac mini. Linked up to an HDTV and using eye TV it has taken the place of my power guzzling PC, Freeview box, DVD player and Hifi in a single neat package.
What does apple TV do - erm itunes?!!
….low quality video?
..can’t think of anything else!
