Some Web 2.0 Bubble Signs
August 14th, 2007
Two more items came to pass that bear some mention, especially in relationship to the 2007 Web Bubble predictions I made a while back (Nov 2006 to be exact). Here they are again as a refresher:
- The “New Internet Boom” makes the cover of Newsweek, TIME, and Wired.
- Google stock hits $1,000 a share.
- Old Web 1.0 companies return from the grave for another go.
- Businesses whose sole purpose is to help Web 2.0 businesses begin raking it in.
- Advertising takes off.
- People move to the Bay Area just to get a cool job.
- The average joe tries to get in on it.
- A huge new media company buys a huge old media one.
- This blog (or its sister site, Bottle Cap-O-Rama) begin to have business potential.
- I leave my day job to work a start-up - or blog full-time.
And here’s my casual evaluation of where we’re at right now, more than halfway through 2006:
- Time magazine had “You” as the person of the year. Now Newsweek has joined the Internet boom with a cover story on Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. Wired is pretty much a given at this point - just a matter of time (no pun intended).
- Not happening.
- Amazon is getting into grocery delivery, just like WebVan did back in the day. Not exactly the same as Gazoontite returning for one more go, but we’re getting closer.
- Not sure if this fits the bill.
- It’s looking up.
- Not totally bubbly from my standpoint - as I’m not reading newspaper articles about landlords accepting stock options for rent due to the influx of new wanna be dotcommers.
- Well, maybe if you include all the bloggers. But seriously, the VMware IPO might be a return to the days where your uncle says “anything with .com in the stock goes up!” Mathew Ingram seems to consider this a bubbly sign.
- Rupert (News Corp, MySpace) bought the Wall Street Journal. Getting closer. I’m waiting for something more bubbly like Google buying the San Francisco Chronicle
- Ever increasing trickle of ad revenue, and the Blog Herald…
- Nope. Nope.
So I’m still feeling bubbly, but I’m not busting out the sock puppet or the Amici’s Pizza just yet.
