My iTunes Widget: Look To The Right

August 10th, 2007

Apple My Tunes iTunes Widget

An iTunes widget from Apple was recently released without too much fanfare. It can be set to display your most recent iTunes Store purchases, the music reviews you’ve written for the store, or links to the artists you’ve bought the most stuff of.

Just visit this page on the Apple site to see widget examples and create your own. There are three sizes and some color scheme choices.

Getting the embed code is pretty straight forward. Just click the “Sign in now” button. You’ll actually need to login to your iTunes account via the iTunes application to associate your account with the widget. In the iTunes program, there are two screens of preferences and you’re back to the browser.

The widget is in Flash so it’s just a matter of pasting the embed code in your site or blog sidebar file and there you go.

Now if you look to the right, you can see the widget in action, and that I really do buy stuff from the iTunes music store, including all those Grey’s Anatomy and Battlestar Galactica episodes as I’ve said before on this blog… not that you doubted me or anything.
Clicking on any of the media listed in the widget opens said media up in iTunes. Obviously I’m wonder if there will eventually be some connection to the iTunes Affiliate program, so the hoster of the widget could get a small monetary benefit from occasional purchases.

Second, it’s interesting that if Apple really wanted to, they could build a social network around iTunes. I’ve never really played with the review thing but there’s obviously a lot of potential to link up fans of certain music with others based on their iTunes purchases.

Anyhow, we’ll see how this widget fares for the time being. If it starts slowing down the blog’s loading time, it’s toast.

Update: Yeah… it’s toast. It was definitely slowing down the loading time a tad.

  • Idea to put a widget on blog with your latest iTunes purchases is fullish. You could also take a pics of your last few t-shirts and make a widget about it. Or maybe your last 5 underware...Actually, that would be cool !
  • I can't get this to work for me but I am not sure if I'm trying to put it in the right place.
