Wireless Router Died: Back To The Dark Ages

August 9th, 2007

TechnologyYeah. So. The Belkin wireless G router gave up the ghost today. Meaning, I had to bust out the old school Ethernet cables and hook them up to the broadband modem. So right now, the MacBook is online. But since the wireless router was also a hub, the iMac is presently offline.

I seem to remember there’s a way to turn a Mac into an wireless hub, so what I’m going to do next is Ethernet the iMac and have it broadcast so I can get on the Internet via the MacBook over the wireless.

I guess buying a new wireless router is on the shopping list for this weekend. Lucky thing they’re pretty cheap.

So forgive me for not a more substantial post tonight - I guess you can blame it on technical difficulties.

Update: A quick run to Best Buy solved the problem. I bought the same router as before, which now seems to be the cheapest at thirty-something bucks.

I did momentarily eye Apple’s Airport Express but it has no Ethernet ports for computers which I like as a backup, and the Airport Extreme is nearly $200. What’s up with that? Is it all for “N”?

Pretty amusing time setting it up. The wizard failed to do it correctly so I connected directly to the router to get it working. Out of the box, there is no admin password and the router is an open door. It still is rather odd to me how you have to change settings to hide the wireless network and active WEP.

Anyhow, it’s all done now, so I can go to bed without suffering from wireless Internet absence shakes. Can’t have that.
