Bottle Cap Madness, Webomatica Update
I haven’t mentioned my bottle cap collection over at Bottle Cap-O-Rama in a while, so an update is in order. At this point, I’m up to 1700 plus bottle caps, but in terms of scanning and updating the database, I’m behind so the site shows about 1650 bottle caps.
I started collecting bottle caps around the same time I began blogging, a little over a year ago. I was hoping to learn MySQL and pHp and needed a large amount of “something” to keep track of in a database-driven website. I chose bottle caps because they don’t take up much space and are relatively easy to come by (cheap).
Anyhow, since the site uses Joomla as a CMS I haven’t learned too much MySQL or pHp, but I now have a crap load of bottle caps from around the world and an increasingly unweildy website. I discovered an international network of bottle cap collectors, some of whom have 50,000+ bottle caps in their collections. I’ve done several trades via the mail with other collectors.
The coolest thing is I occasionally receive unsolicited donations friends, family, and co-workers, and sometimes people who have found my collection online. The largest donors collected bottle caps as kids and now have no use for them. A recent donor sent me 150 - 200 bottle caps from the seventies.
I’ve also created bottle cap pages according to brewery or company. Here’s a page I’m especially proud of, showing Boylan Soda bottle caps. And here are some Coca-Cola bottle caps.
I’ve decided anything can be a collection if you get enough of it. I also have a mint tin collection that I’ve been meaning to get online at some point.
Since I’m on the subject of updates, here’s a brief Webomatica one:
- I added a Donation button for tips. Pretty much any income is used for running this site, buying media to review, and contest prizes. At the rate things are going the contests will be more frequent and hopefully lucrative.
- I added a “Top Commentators” list to the sidebar. It resets every month so new commentators have a chance at getting on the list, which includes a link back to your site.
- I’m still enjoying writing for The Blog Herald.
- My eyes are burning from watching Bad Movies for the Second Webomatica Contest. And I’ve only watched two so far.
- Moved all my cobweb-laden music stuff to another blog on Webomatica. I don’t expect much activity to be going on over there anytime soon, but someday.
Anyhow, thanks for continuing to check out the site. It’s been a lot of fun so far and the main reason why I keep blogging is because of all you readers and the blogs you write.

Woot! I got the top spot in the comments list
Your bottlecap collection is pretty sweet. I still want to see more drink reviews tied into the db. I will admit that despite not being into caps, the Boylan page is cool looking. During our trip to Portland, Kalea started collecting bottle caps. She currently has a collection of 7 caps (I think). Two of which were found on the ground. I should show her your site so she can be inspired.
Btw, you mention that you’ve seen 2 of the bad movies. Where’s the 2nd review? I’ve only seen the Freddy Got Fingered post. I still want to try to get down to your ‘hood to catch one of these flicks with you…you doing weeknight screenings?
Hey Dave - I have to back track at some point and add more drink reviews along with a bunch of other maintenance related crap (more links to the companies, and adding my “tray” information as to where the cap is physically stored). Maybe Kalea can be an intern in a couple of years…
Ah as for the bad flicks I have a review of The Tombs of the Blind Dead almost ready to go - should be tomorrow. I have Ghost Rider and Mommy Dearest coming next - so a weekday screening might work out!
