Horny Geeks And Hot Babes Web 2.0 Style

August 3rd, 2007

TechnologyI know August is a rather slow month, but it seems some of the geek Technorati have nothing better to do than gawk at pretty women. Aren’t there some business models to chase? Or are the geeks too busy chasing models and calling it business? When was drooling over hardware replaced with drooling over soft wear?

Okay, that was bad.

When I heard Owen Thomas (formerly of Suck) was joining Valleywag, I was looking forward to more wit, but it seems part of the deal is an inordinate number of posts about East Coast columnist Julia Allison and a “horny” Mike Arrington trying to get her to stay in California after a geek-norati party at his house. I cynically figure Valleywag’s devotion to this “hot” subject is a ploy for more traffic.

Humor doesn’t have to stoop to this geek-gawk level. Even the sometimes unfunny Fake Steve Jobs makes me chuckle by calling the unintentionally funny John Dvorak a “frigtard.”

Next is Morgan Webb, a TechTV alumni (anybody else remember her cohort Cat Schwartz and the unfortunate Photoshop mistake… yikes). Her new video podcast called “Webb Alert” is pretty decent (Arrington loves it). Still, I groan at totally crass yet expected nerd comments about how this new video podcast would be better viewed with the sound off, or if Morgan would only sit about a foot back from the camera. Sheez. Have a little respect!

But seriously… some of the less distractable bloggers suggest that Federated Media (coiners of the marketing-speak “three way conversation“) - of which Webb Alert (and TechCrunch) are a part - may be pumping other Federated Media properties via Webb. Thanks to the checks and balances of the blogosphere to place skepticism over ogling.

As far as I’m concerned, I value quality over beauty, which is why I still listen to Diggnation or TWiT podcasts, and the musings of Amber Macarthur (yet another Canadian!) from Inside the Net or Molly Wood who sometimes guests on TWiT.

Morgan, you have everyone’s attention; please use it wisely and avoid the Amanda Congdon route. Beauty over brains just gets you a fake cable car. Next stop, Rice-A-Roni.

Ah, enough lame jokes. Steve Jobs, I hope Tuesday brings something insanely great so I can get back to hardware specs.
