Second Webomatica Contest: Bad / Good Movies

July 27th, 2007

WebomaticaSo… It’s time for another Webomatica Blog Contest.

The prize this time is similar to the last contest: $20 Amazon Gift Certificate.

The contest is pretty simple and somewhat self-serving, as I’ll hope to get several blog posts out of it. It’s a so-bad-its-good movie contest.

  1. Basically, nominate the absolute worst film you’ve ever seen in the comments below.
  2. Make sure it’s available through Netflix.
  3. Please leave a valid email address so I can send you the prize if you win.
  4. Please nominate only one movie per person.
  5. I’ll watch all the suggested films, review them, and decide which was the worst of the bunch - that is so bad it actually was entertaining. The person who nominated the so-bad-its-good movie wins the prize.

As a hint, this is the sort of entertainment I’m looking for.

I’ll close off the list of nominees after I get five movies to watch.

Okay, have fun, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

OK I’ll give it a try - my “so bad it’s good” movie is: Freddy Got Fingered

Since I did watch it all the way through, I can’t say it’s the worst movie I’ve ever seen. Movies that are just flat out _bad_ I turn off. Since I made it all the way through this piece of crap, I guess I’d have to say that “it’s so bad it’s good” :)

Also, if by some chance I win, I’d prefer that my $20 goes to your nearest homeless shelter, shelter for battered women, or NORML chapter, if that’s possible.

  2. comment Gravatar Webomatica - July 27th, 2007

Ross, I haven’t seen Freddy Got Fingered and remember being curious about it (because it got such terrible reviews), so I’m strangely looking forward to seeing it. Good choice. And as for the prize I will make note of that. I am no fan of Tom Green so you have a good chance of winning…

I’m going to vote for Plan 9 from Outer Space. I watched it twice. It was the worst movie ever filmed, at yet I couldn’t take my eyes away from the screen. I especially loved the special effects: A hubcap on a string for a UFO says it all.

Oh, and how about the fact that they used archived footage of Bela Lugosi because Ed Wood wanted him in the film despite the fact that he was dead. The rest of the time he was played by Tom Mason with a cape over his face.

Then there’s the shots inside the UFO where it’s nothing more than a table in the middle of a room surrounded by curtains. Why would there be curtains in a UFO?

And I just loved the whole explanation using a gas-can as a sun and a ball as the Earth: “Take a can of your gasoline. Say this can of gasoline is the sun. Now spread a thin line of it to a ball representing the Earth. Now the gasoline represents the sunlight, the sun particles. Here we saturate the ball with the gasoline- the sunlight- then we put a flame to the ball. The flame will speedily travel around the Earth, back along the line of gasoline to the can- or the sun itself. It will explode this source, and spread to every place that gasoline- our sunlight- touches. Explode the sunlight here, gentlemen, you explode the universe. Explode the sunlight here and a chain reaction will occur direct to the sun itself and to all the planets that sunlight touches. To every planet in the universe. This is why you must be stopped. This is why any means must be used to stop you. In a friendly manner or, as it seems, you want it.”

    So bad it’s bad: Envy

So bad it’s good: Tombs of the Blind Dead, 1971.

Watch the Spanish version with subtitiles though, the american version is re-edited into a different plot and not as good.

  5. comment Gravatar Webomatica - July 27th, 2007

Heh. I have seen Plan 9 but I’ll watch it again for this contest. It is defintely a bad / good movie. Now I haven’t seen Tombs of the Blind Dead so I’m looking forward to that (found it on Netflix!).

That’s three so far, thanks for participating!

  6. comment Gravatar Jess - July 27th, 2007

    I suggest: Mommie Dearest

  7. comment Gravatar Ross - July 27th, 2007

engtech - Envy was one of those movies I turned off. In part because I had such high hopes (the cast!). I’ve never seen Tombs of the Blind Dead so I may have to rent that one myself.

  8. comment Gravatar James - July 27th, 2007

Ghostrider with Nic Cage - Terrible but the special effects were cool.

  9. comment Gravatar Rob O. - July 27th, 2007

The Machinist is one of the worst I’ve seen - and reviewing back on my Netflix rentals, I’ve watched more than my fair share of crappy movies.

  10. comment Gravatar Dede - July 27th, 2007

My vote is for Reform School Girls. It is soooo bad that I have had to watch over and over again!

  11. comment Gravatar Mike - July 27th, 2007

Envy was horrible. Even Christopher Walken couldn’t save the film, and that’s saying something.

But since engtech already said that one, I’ll go with Ghost Ship (2002). It got twice the rating as Envy on rottentomatoes.com (wow, 12%!), but it’s still pretty terrible.

A friend and I sat in the empty movie theater and made jokes as the movie progressed, sort of like Mystery Science Theater 3000 (but unscripted).

  12. comment Gravatar Mike - July 27th, 2007

Also, here’s the link for “Ghost Ship” on Netflix. ;)

  13. comment Gravatar Ross - July 27th, 2007

Way to make me think about this all day. Bastard. I’m sticking w/ Freddie Got Fingered, but I think my ultimate “it’s so bad it’s good” movie is Cabin Boy (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/60023204?trkid=73). But it’s actually genius. Awful, but really, really genius.

  14. comment Gravatar Podophile - July 27th, 2007

I’m something of a connoisseur of this type of film, so narrowing down the choices has been a challenge. For the purposes of this contest, I have to go with Russ Meyer’s Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls. I’ve watched this movie at least once a year for the last 20 years. I still shake my head in wonder.

  15. comment Gravatar Dave - July 28th, 2007

It was a toss up between “Laserblast” (remember that piece o garbaggio?) and “Do or Die”.

Anyway, I decided to have mercy on you and nominate “Do or Die” b/c Andy Sidaris is just so much more satisfying:
    http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Triple_B_Collection_Do_or_Die/70046010

I’m not sure if you ever saw this one. It’s got Pat Morita and Erik Estrada as well as all the usual babes and corny action.

  16. comment Gravatar Webomatica - July 29th, 2007

Wow, This is an awesome list. Here’s the list so far:

    Freddy Got Fingered
    Plan 9 From Outer Space
Tombs of the Blind Dead 1971
    Mommie Dearest
    Ghostrider
    Machinist
    Reform School Girls
    Ghost Ship
Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls
    Do Or Die

I guess I’ll extend it past 5 movies since this list is pretty tempting. I will stop the list here, however.

Thanks for all these entries and I’m thinking I’ll review each one in a separate post and then announce the worst and the winner of the contest at the end.

Looks like I missed the deadline, but I’d still like to suggest Eragon. If I hadn’t been watching it with accompanying Rifftrax, I surely would have gone mad.

  18. comment Gravatar webomatica - July 29th, 2007

Hi Tunequest I might bend the rules a bit and let Eragon in there - I realized I have already seen the Machnist and Plan 9. But I must refrain from adding many more or it will take me a long time to watch all these films - and even longer if they are really bad…

  19. comment Gravatar em - July 29th, 2007

my friends had a ‘bad movie’ night and boy were they bad. taking the cake was The Room. unfortunately i guess it’s not on netflix but you must check it out as a bonus.

  20. comment Gravatar SpragueD - July 30th, 2007

Rob O. thinks The Machinist is one of the worst?! As a charter member of the Christian Bale is God or Damned Near It Club, I’m speechless. I’m afraid I’m just going to have to challenge Rob to a post off. I’ve wanted to write about that movie, anyway. Looking forward to your take on it, Jason.

  21. comment Gravatar Rob O. - July 30th, 2007

Sprague, as much as I like Christian Bale, I just can’t make apologies for some of the weak choices he’s made lately. The Machinist was flat-out painful to watch. Oh sure, it was impressive that he had the determination and professionalism to drop such a chunk of body weight to tie in the with the story. But the material was not of the same caliber as his acting and so it was kinda for naught.

And “Harsh Times?” What a waste!

Okay, okay, sure he was awesome in “Batman Begins” - the best Batman since Keaton. And “Reign of Fire” was incredible - although that’s as much for McConaughey’s snarling, post-Apocalyptic, mountain-man. And “The Prestige” was excellent throughout.

So, Bale is certainly more hit than miss…

  22. comment Gravatar Webomatica - July 31st, 2007

Well, the deep dark secret is I did watch and review The Machinist back in the early days of the blog. I didn’t think it was super terrible.

I’m willing to watch it again through the bad / good filter, and I’m not sure if the fact I thought it was a fair rental means it’s a better bad movie or a worse one…

As for Christian Bale, he’s a pretty awesome actor (I’d like to see the new Herzog film) but I agree with Rob O. that his choices have been rather “huh?” inducing.

  23. comment Gravatar SpragueD - July 31st, 2007

But, guys, that’s what makes him so great — he’s a future super eccentric classic character actor in the making. His choices are very odd (American Psycho and Batman???), but never boring.

I have some theories about why he chose The Machinist and why he tortured himself for it (suffering for his art, etc.), but don’t want to turn this thread into The Christian Bale Show. You’re right, though Rob — when he misses he misses by a mile.

I know that I already submitted my movie, however, I just have to let you know about this one: Sinbad of the Seven Seas with Lou Ferrigno. It was a tough call between that movie, Plan 9, and the Batman movie with Adam West. (Gotta love how he always had the right thing for the most bizarre situations: “Robin! Quick! Hand me the shark-repellant!”)

The reason why I chose not to submit Sinbad of the Seven Seas was because I would have felt responsible for your comatose state after watching the first ten minutes of the show. Let me just say this: One of the character’s name is “Poochie the Dwarf.” Yeah. Ummm.. I am embarassed to admit it, but, er, well, I watched it twice. Once by myself and a second time with a friend just to see the look on his face when he watched my “favorite” movie with me.

Seriously, if you love watching those old B movies, this is a must see. And if you do end up watching it, my favorite line in the whole movie is: “Gosh, you’re beautiful.” Yeah, you gotta watch it to see what I mean.

  25. comment Gravatar Jaxim - August 1st, 2007

    “Dude, Where’s my Car?”

Just about everyone at the time of this movie’s release said this movie was terrible, but I don’t know. Maybe I just like bad movies. I thought it was great. It was so stupid that it was funny. Plus, it has Jennifer Gardner in it, so how can you not like it?!

  26. comment Gravatar Daniel Sweet - August 4th, 2007

The best worst movie that I know of is “The Waterboy” - The whole thing is really terrible, but you can tell they had a really good time making it. “You can do it, Bobby Bouchay!”

Wow - so many bad / good movies. The first of them have been recieved in my mailbox so I’ll start watching these.
