Advertising Thoughts

July 20th, 2007

TechnologyHere’s a fairly interesting new idea for advertising which is called “opt in.” AdPerk is basically a service where the viewer is given an incentive to view an ad. Rather than being intrusive and surprising me to get my attention, if I choose to view something it’s more likely I’ll actually pay attention to it.

The second thought is how I’ve become more interested in media and products that are suggested by readers of this blog. It’s funny but I’m way more apt to check out some movie recommended by a friendly reader - especially if that reader writes a blog I read - than some ad blaring in my face.

Now I’m sure some advertising guy will think this means starting service where clients pay to create comments that suggest products on blogs, but it’s more complex than that. I’d have to believe you’re an actual reader and ideally a blogger for this to work. I guess it would be something like recommendations from a friend on a social networking site. The fact that the suggester is in my network would be the spam filter.

The last item I want to mention is a recent Internet ad that I enjoyed so much I watched it five times over. It’s for Comcast Triple Play with a free Nintendo DS. It’s a cartoon done by John Kricfalusi who did Ren and Stimpy. What cracks me up are all the little, cynical touches like “mommy won’t talk to grandma anymore,” the bizarre dragon / dog mascot that I think is supposed to be “the triple play” and the sleep-deprived parents succumbing to “irresponsible marketing.” The drawings are awesome.

These observations are meant to show that while traditional advertising is losing its touch, there are still ways to get the attention of the most ad-phobic of consumers.
