HD-DVD or Blu-Ray? XBOX or Apple TV?

June 20th, 2007

TechnologyI’ll be the first to admit I’m a newbie when it comes to all this HD TV stuff. So it seems there are two competing formats, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I seem to have heard more about HD-DVD, but it also seems that Blu-Ray has a lot going for it - for example, Blockbuster recently announced they’re going to only rent Blu-Ray discs.

But to further complicate matters, the XBOX, which I have been flirting around the edges of getting since it really looks sweet in a HD TV, only does HD-DVD. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 3 which I’m not as interested in, has Blu-Ray.

Both formats are rather expensive for my taste. Netflix is renting both formats.

Blu-Ray has an isolated case of “disc rot”.

Ultimately, the kicker for me is going to be which direction Apple goes, as in, are they going to have Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drives attached to future Macs?

Maybe I should just wait this one out until a format has “won” and you can get a player for $200. Maybe I’ll buy an Apple TV in the meantime. It’s cheaper, you can stream stuff bought from the Apple Store (which we have scads of), photos, music, YouTube videos and even ripped DVDs so long as they’re in the MP4 format.

I’m just so confused… format wars suck.
