WWDC Thoughts: Leopard Looks Awesome, iTunes In Finder, Safari On Windows?

June 11th, 2007

AppleWell I guess I should get the first huh? out of the way. I don’t get Safari on Windows. Even though I’m on a Mac, I’ve pretty much ditched Safari in favor of Firefox. If only Safari were somehow integrated with iTunes, maybe. But Firefox seems so embedded in people’s usage these days I think Safari has a hill to climb even on the Mac.

Still, any free download from Apple is worth checking out. Get Safari 3 here, now…

Other than that, the Leopard improvements look amazing. Most notable is the new Finder and especially using iTunes as a metaphor for navigating around a Mac. It makes more sense the more I think about it, especially for those of us who spend lots of time in iTunes and are familiar with that interface, or switchers who are familiar with using iTunes on Windows.

Not sure how useful that Cover Flow view will be in the Finder over the long term. It might be the presently-useless “Dock magnify” feature redux.

I’m also excited to use Safari to create Dashboard widgets, Spaces, Time Machine, and Boot Camp that will be built-in.

Overall, however, there weren’t any cool hardware announcements that I expected in my crazy fantasies. The writing of applications for the iPhone was expected by pretty much everyone. But the emphasis of “if your web app works in Safari, it will work on iPhone” means developers might be more eager to download Safari for Windows for development purposes.

All in all, the keynote fell within my expectations of “most likely” with nothing Insanely Great. Oh well.

Note: Looks like the Apple website has undergone a slight redesign. Slick, and surely a preview of the new Leopard interfaces. The Apple Store looks really different with a horizontal scroll window showing all the products.

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
