Interesting: Safari 3.0 On A MacBook
June 11th, 2007
(I suppose you’re wondering why this post looks like this. Well, it’s because I used Safari 3.0 to write it).I initially thought “huh?” when it came to the new version of Safari on Windows, but it’s a free download. I’m currently checking it out on my MacBook, and while it looks like there are some decent improvements, there is no real compelling reason for me to ditch Firefox just yet.First off, I don’t think I’m just imagining things, but this version of Safari is faster at loading pages and images, the Google apps in particular (like Google Reader and GMail). Also pretty slick is the ability to resize form fields if need be – for example the very box I’m typing this post in, has a few lines in the lower left corner that indicate it can be resized. Pretty handy. I’m also noticing red underlines under misspelled words. A control-click on said erroneous words calls up a contextual menu so you can fix ‘em.But you know what? That’s it. I can’t find or think of anything else to mention. The one feature I’m really looking forward to is “Web Clip” or something where you can select a portion of a web page and make your own Dashboard widget – will be in Leopard.

And there are strange glitches. For instance, when I switch between code view and visual view here in WordPress, it munges all my formatting, making everything into one paragraph. Okay. I can’t use this version of Safari to update this blog. Back to Firefox…Meanwhile, Frantic Industries says the Windows version of Safari is unstable (and I couldn’t add this link in Safari 3.0, either). Sigh.
Apple has a lot of catching up to do in the browser department – this is coming from a die-hard Mac user. Firefox has really leapt ahead, especially with its variety of useful plugins that I now can’t imagine experiencing the Internet without. But munging up form fields and my blog is really unacceptable. So, sorry about the wonky formatting. It’s just necessary to prove a point…
