Flash Project: Fanpop Widget
So… I avoid blogging about my “day job” but I have divulged that I do web design and more recently, Flash stuff. Over the past few weeks I had the opportunity to create a Flash widget for my long time pal Dave over at Fanpop, a Web 2.0 site.
Basically, they have a cool poll feature called “picks” where users can create fun multiple choice questions for other users to vote on. They wanted a simple widget so users could display the status of a particular poll on their own sites.
Here is the widget showing three Fanpop picks in action:
(Sorry about that last one. It’s just funny to see what actual users come up with.)
The basic idea is that this one widget that works with a large variety of polls. One detail worth noting is that the widget will also display the user’s selection in the poll, adding a bit more personalization. In the first Battlestar Galactica widget you can see my vote for that question.
The “picks” are already super popular on Fanpop and this widget will hopefully spread the poll results around, and get more people to check out the picks and the site itself.
I had fun working on this widget with the Fanpop dudes, and I thank them for letting me play around with their data. It inspired me to jump right into CS3 and get busy. Lastly, I’m glad to see it’s working, as obviously I posted some widgets in this post, and nothing exploded. Sweet!
Jason — that’s a cool widget. You should check out the yourminis.com (http://www.yourminis.com/developers for the API) widget platform. We allow you to leverage our API’s to turn your widget into a yourminis widget. You’ll get some really cool benefits such as resizing support (during configuration), color selection for the background, framing selection, etc. More importantly, you’ll get “copy me” support which provides for easy syndication to sites such as MySpace, Xango, TypePad, Blogger, iGoogle, Live, and even desktop environments such as Vista. And you’ll also get access analytics to see what’s happening with your widget — views, copies, interactions, etc. — very powerful stuff. Give it a shot when you have some time.
You should give the Sandbox css design competition a lookie.

Sandbox may become the default theme for WordPress, so it can make for some really good exposure.
After a deadline (which is this friday) I might have some extra bandwidth…
