Grey’s Anatomy And The iTunes Store

Once again, my wife’s Grey’s Anatomy addiction is forcing me to push technology to the max. I mentioned earlier that we were watching Season 2 when our DVD player failed, resulting in some impulsive hardware upgrades. Well, we’re now through Season 2… and Season 3 isn’t out on DVD yet.
So how to watch Season 3? Well, there are the improper methods of Torrent-O-Rama, but I’ve vowed to go legit this year.
My first instinct was to check the iTunes Store as that’s how I watched Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica. Lo and behold, Steve Jobs has seen it fit to stock his entertainment portal with Grey’s Anatomy. Sweet!
I bought the season pass and downloaded several gigabytes worth of Dr. McDreamy and the serial monogamists of Seattle Grace Hospital. The full season means 22 episodes at about 500 MB apiece. That’s a crapload of data… all in all about 12 gigabytes. So will Meredith choose the vet? Will Izzy recover from inadvertently killing the man she loves? Who knows? Does anybody care?
I wonder if Apple’s business model for iTunes television was a survey of geek’s favorite shows (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Heroes, Lost) and if (geek.spouse = true) then {#include geek.spouse.favorite_shows} ? It almost seems too convenient to be a coincidence.
Anyhow, once the episodes are downloaded, I’ve found they stream pretty well from our desktop to my MacBook via the iTunes sharing feature. I can then hook up the MacBook to the television. The quality leaves a bit to be desired, but it sure beats waiting several months for the DVD.
