iTunes 7.2 Released, Microsoft’s Multitouch Table, Google Maps

AppleWow, much stuff going on.

Apple Releases iTunes 7.2 With iTunes Plus

Apple just released iTunes 7.2 with support for “iTunes Plus” - I guess their marketing-speak for the un-DRMed tracks that were being spearheaded by EMI.

I’m downloading this puppy right now. Also, earlier today was yet another security update.

Microsoft’s Multitouch Table

Microsoft’s “Surface Computing” multitouch table is something that looks so slick you’d think Apple made it, or at the very least, suddenly I’m hoping Apple is working on some sort of multitouch-monitor-tablet-Mac just because Microsoft can’t be making cool stuff like this without a response from Apple.

None of this will make any sense unless you watch the video of this table in action, meaning people moving photos around, resizing them, tossing them into a phone or a camera, or playing games, on a lighted, graphically rich table that looks like something out of Minority Report.

The first thing I thought of when seeing the video was: Wii for computing. And yes, I should mention this product is (in the Microsoft way) inspired by Jeff Han and his Multi-Touch Interaction Research.

Google Maps “Street View”

Google Maps

And lastly, Google Maps just added a “street view” feature which lets you zoom down and look at photographs taken at street level for the major cities of New York, Denver, Miami, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. They also seemed to be hitting select segments of the Bay Area, namely Mountain View, Oakland, and Palo Alto.

Google drove within a block of our apartment, but unfortunately turned too soon. The above photograph is a familiar view for me.

It seems Google drove around these cities in a van or something and took photographs that were later stitched together to create the 3D panorama effect. The images are served up via Flash. Greg Sadetsky has some further, detailed information.

Whew!

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.

Apple said the DRM-free songs would be available in May and they waited until the last possible moment to deliver. Still, the iTunes Store might be able to ply some dollars from me now.

Heh… I wonder if the Apple lateness will apply to any more of Apple’s products. I could handle that from the iPhone but not Leopard…
