Music Notes: Dance Tonight, Paul McCartney

May 24th, 2007

Paul McCartney has a new album out soon, Memory Almost Full. With a title like that, I fear that McCartney has gotten lazy again, and this track confirms it. He can write songs like this in his sleep.

What’s especially bumming is I really liked his last disc, Chaos And Creation In The Backyard. Seemed like he was on the edge of an artistic re-awakening.

I guess I won’t know for sure until I have a chance at listening to the album proper, but there really isn’t much to recommend about this first tune except that the video has Natalie Portman in it. But at least it will be available via iTunes and Starbucks so you can make up the extra energy via a Star Trek episode download or a triple caramel McCartneyatto.

The second worthwhile thing about this music video is that in addition to the lovely Natalie Portman, the delivery man is played by Mackenzie Cook (the guy who played the dopey Gareth Keenan in the UK version of The Office).

I never heard Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, but I’ll concur that this track was pretty awful. I wonder how much this album was impacted by his nasty breakup with Heather Mills? Though I suppose it doesn’t seem especially apparent in this particular track :-P

Hmmm I dunno. I really ought to listen to the album first to be fair to Sir Paul. It should be available in iTunes really soon now.

Heard it on TV (i Tunes commercial), googled it, and watched the video.
Loved the mandolin, reminiscent of the early McCartney simple, fun lyrics.
Video reminded me of Harry Potter for some reason!
Looking forward to the new album. Happy belated birthday Paul!
