Movie Notes: Persepolis Coming Soon

May 22nd, 2007

This could go under comic notes as well, but it looks like Persepolis the animated movie just hit Cannes. I’m pretty excited to check this film out, having read both graphic novels Persepolis 1 and Persepolis 2.

Here’s a really great interview with creator Marjane Satrapi, discussing both the film and working in several countries. She’s Iranian by birth, but the film was produced in France (as is in French), although she has published more books in America.

What got me excited was watching some of the first clips that you can see here over at “Martin Scorsese is Really Quite a Jovial Fellow”. The art was kept starkly black and white just like the original graphic novel, only with some smooth animation inserted in appropriate places. The clash of white and black shapes was one of the best things about Persepolis.

Anyhow, because it’s going to be subtitled, it’s a safe bet it will make its Bay Area debut at the Embarcadero Theater or the Burlingame Hyatt.
