Movie Notes: The Stanford Theatre

May 14th, 2007

The Stanford Movie Theatre in Palo Alto is a real gem of a movie-going experience. They show only classic movies, and we saw one of the greatest, The Philadelphia Story, the romantic comedy standard starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and Jimmy Stewart.

The theater is set up to recreate a classic movie-going experience in a spacious two-tier auditorium, movie posters galore, ornate decorations, curtains on the screen, and a real organ! To top it off, the concession stand sells cheap snacks, and if that isn’t appealing, you can bring your own.

Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo is as recent as this movie house goes. Right now they’re having a Kate Hepburn celebration (here’s the schedule).

The Philadelphia Story was a real treat on the big screen. I’d seen the film on television and DVD, but in a theater, facial features and details of hair and clothing are quite noticeable, and hearing Hepburn’s odd laugh “ahahahahahaha…” with a hall’s echo in support is a definite joy.

Anyhow, if you get a chance to check out a flick at The Stanford Movie Theatre I highly recommend it. Plus, following the time-warp contained within, you have all the attractions of University Avenue waiting for you.

Fully agree. By the way, seeing a silent movie at this venue is just the best ever - the Mighty Wurlitzer organ sounds great when played by one of the keyboard masters who ply their trade here, and David Packard gets nothing but the best possible prints for showing off the joys of silent films. The theater is clean, quiet, and impeccably beautiful. Comfy chairs, reasonably-priced vittles and excellent acoustics round out the experience. This is the way it's supposed to be!
  • Hey Bruce, the organist wasn't there during Philadelphia Story, but we definitely want to return... luckilly we now get the schedule in the mail so we'll keep our eyes out for the next fun film. The theater is a real gem in Palo Alto!
