Battlestar Galactica: Next Season Is The End?

May 11th, 2007

I trust this statement because it’s from two trustworthy sources: ParisLemon and Ed Olmos, who plays Commander Adama on Battlestar Galactica.

Here’s the juicy quote:

We’re heading into the final season. This is the final season as we speak. All of us are very saddened by that, but we always knew there was going to be a conclusion and we would find Earth, so we will be finding Earth this season. I wish it would [keep going]. I could do 10 years like this season. I think that this is some of the finest usages of television that I have been a part of in my life. Bar none.

Sounds exciting. If true, I hope this lights a frakking fire under the whole team, making every episode count towards the greater plot arc of finding Earth and explaining all this “who’s the Cylon?” stuff.

I think it’s better to decide to end a show well before the season is already underway so everyone involved can prepare for it. A big failing of Gilmore Girls is the series finale airing next week was filmed before the show was cancelled. I’m sadly certain we’re headed for a let down.

There’s also the situation of renewing a show year after year, greatly tempting a shark-jump or running out of creative juices.

Lastly, I must find a new show to write about, as both Battlestar Galactica and Gilmore Girls are toast. This must be a small reminder to not let your blog’s niche be so narrow that if it disappears, you’re toast as well.

Update: Now I’m reading that one of the producers says don’t listen to Ed Olmos; it’s not the end:

“For those of you who have been paying attention over the years, this is not the first time Eddie has made an announcement about the possibility of the show’s end,” chuckled Eick. “I promise you that when [executiuve producer] Ron [Moore] and I make a decision about Galactica’s future, we’ll let you know.”

Frak. Sometimes I hate the internet and its way with wily rumors.

  • you could easily replace them with shows like Heros and Jericho. they are both new shows that look to be maintaining a pace to keep them alive for seasons to come.
  • I'm definitely looking at Heroes, since I hear so much good about it. I think I'll wait until it comes out on DVD (hopefully during the summer) and get caught up, which shouldn't be too hard with only one season.

I think I'll put the choice of a new show for me to watch up to a poll on this blog, after Gilmore Girls goes bye by next week Tuesday.
  • I'm defintely glad about this announcement. I mean there is some bittersweetness to it (that the show is ending), but I'd rather the show end strong than peter out in pointlessness (and jump that damned shark).

They recently announced an endpoint for Lost as well (another of my favorite shows that had been up/down in season 3 too).

I think it's psychologically good for the viewers. It lets them know that their investment is not in vain and that they will not be teased and teased until the end of time by the writers/producers.

As for Heroes, I heartily second that recommendation. By far my favorite show these days.
  • Yeah Heroes sounds really cool. I've been resisting jumping into the show since from what I've heard, one needs to watch it from the beginning. So I'd been waiting until it came out on DVD so I could watch the whole thing sequentially.

Although, I see now that it is available in the iTunes store, just like BSG. Hmmm!

Heroes is really the bomb......I highly suggest jumping on board. I DO NOT think this will be the last season for BSG, even though it may be a good "time" for it, if we remember the original, the Cylons combed the galaxy for years chasing the Galactica as it searched for earth. I personally think they have ser Boltar up to join the Cylons permantly as their human leader much as the original show did. In my mind this means a least a couple more seasons of cat and mouse before they find earth. Sighhhhhhhh
  • Hi Pitz, I do like your idea of putting Baltar back with the Cylons. One thing I didn't really care for about Season 3 is how it seemed they were trying to get the fleet back together as how it was before they got to New Caprica.

Right now I'm actually thinking about rewatching seasons 1 and 2 before Season 4 starts, and if I am really into it I might even watch the old tv series for clues about where the new shows might go.

    Thanks for visiting and commenting!

Battlestar Galactica cards and figures will and are already worth something. I would snap up things like this...http://tinyurl.com/6ba6yy and add to the value by not selling it for a while.
