Natalie Portman Gets Web 2.0? Hot Grits

TechnologyUh… this is that strange confluence of celebrity, movies, and Web 2.0 that bears mentioning. According to Valleywag, Natalie Portman is interested in a “continuous video feed of her work and personal life”.

The question posed via Twitter: How big of an audience do you think Natalie Portman lifecasting could attract?

Well, I think Celebrity Twittering is a gold mine just waiting to happen. “I ate Cheerios for breakfast” is rightfully mundane when coming from Joe Average, but crazed fans would be thrilled to know that NATALIE FREAKING PORTMAN had CHEERIOS for breakfast.

It’s also amusing to see professionals taking on amateurs, as Will Ferrel and that small landlord did, demonstrating how an actor with a previous reputation can take viral to extremely contagious.

Then pile Natalie Portman lifestreaming on top of that long-running Slashdot joke involving Natalie Portman and hot grits (read more here), and hey, you have a match in Web 2.0 heaven. IMHO of course.

  • When you think about it, it's amazing that there haven't been more celebs, like Will Ferrel boosting their brand and visibility via the web. But then again, I guess it makes sense. If the actors are a mirror on Hollywood, it's no wonder much of the "traditional" media has to be dragged kicking and screaming to the internet trough.

    Natalie Portman livecasting would be brilliant. Are there any B-listers that have attempted to "leapfrog" back into the spotlight via the web? Seems like the web was made for the lower-tier folks looking to get their Hollywood mojo/buzz back.
  • Yeah I dunno what other hollywood B-listers would get into user created content, but it seems like almost a no-brainer, especially since so many of 'em stoop to the reality TV show craze.

    Does Wil Wheaton as a blogger count?
  • I think Portman could open up a whole raft of C-List and lower (don't know where Portman falls on the "List" these days, by the way) celebs going to full-on Justin.tv mode.
  • I think she's fairly up there. I was suprised to read she is thinking about this. I would have expected Corey Feldman or a cast member from Melrose Place, etc. to be considering the Justin TV approach.
  • I don't know. Some of my good friends would go gaga over her twitters but she annoys me. She's just too cutesy/quirky without any real depth.
  • I guess one way to find out if she's really deep or all surface is... watching a few hours of natalieportman.tv

    But yeah - her movies are rather hit and miss for me. While I enjoyed V for Vendetta, Garden State, etc. I definitely wouldn't seek out a movie with her in it.
  • You can say that. @Dave. This would be a breakthrough. Livecasting Natalie Portman's work and personal life, I think it would really attract attention. Not only because she's an actress but this could also pave way to ordinary people showing their personal life live on feed.
