MySpace Party: The Wisdomless Crowd Shows Up
This is a rather sad article: A teenager posted an invitation to a party at her house on MySpace and was flooded by hoodlums who trashed her parents’ house and did a lot of unspeakable things - $48,000 in damages, a suitcase full of alcohol, vomit buckets, cigarette butts everywhere.
“Whoever has come in here are worse than animals, it’s like house rape. They’ve been sick everywhere, urinated and trashed the house. It will take a month for it to be professionally cleaned and we are having to stay in temporary accommodation.”
Her MySpace advertisement for the “Skins” party was subtitled, “Let’s trash the average family-sized house disco party,” though the teenager denies posting the message.
So I guess it’s partly the fault of the MySpace user to invite such death and destruction, but I’m strangely reminded of how the sheer numbers of faceless Digg users sometimes “trash” the websites they land upon.
Something to think about the next time one posts to a social news website. It may be like inviting a bunch of party animals to your website - be prepared!
