Gilmore Girls: No Eighth Season?

April 4th, 2007

Gilmore GirlsThis is an unconfirmed rumor, but hey, one fun thing about writing a blog is spreading such gossip. Anyhow, it looks like Season 8 of Gilmore Girls is a no-go, meaning the show is cancelled and ending this May.

Personally, I’m totally fine with this if true. This season, to be frank, has been a truly stale Pop Tart, leaving this Gilmore fan reaching for pseudonyms like Borey and Snorelai Gilmore, jokes about Paul Anka “jumping the bark,” and Lorelai running off to Thailand. I hope the show can draw the curtain on Stars Hollow with some dignity and end on a positive note with the rumored “final scene” already conceived of by original show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.

Frankly, I think Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, and Scott Patterson are well-poised to make a bigger career jump to other hit shows or feature films. After all, it worked for Adam Brody (The O.C.) and Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes).

I’ll then be freed up for a new television show to obsess over, maybe Amy’s new show starring Parkey Posey (yay): The Return of Jezebel James.

Update: Yeah, the show has been cancelled as of May 3rd.

Amy SP left quite a mess when she left at the end of Season 6. She took the character of Christopher who up until then had only been a minor plot device and placed him front and centre signing him up for 14+1 episodes of Season 7, more than half the season, supplanting Luke as a main character. She told us to invest in Luke and Lorelai and we did, just to see her break them up in such a horrible, disgusting way. She took a decent character, like Luke and turned him into a jerk. She turned Lorelai into a nutcase and a lot of people lost respect for the character. Chris was forever given a pass.
David Rosenthal did what he could with the mess and overall, except for using Christopher way too much, he did a very good job at cleaning it up. Only when Christopher was finally off our screen did I feel that we were back to classic GG. It was glaring that Christopher did not belong in Stars Hollow and to continue with his pairing with Lorelai they would have had to move them both out, thus defeating the whole concept of GG. So normally I would not care whether there is an 8th season or not and would say good riddance, but I feel that this digression needs to be redeemed. That the Lorelai and Luke story needs to get back on track and the majority of the fans who are rooting for the couple need equal time to make up for the waste that was the "Chris and Lore saga". We need more than a few rushed episodes to finish what Amy has started in the first 5 seasons. We will never know what came over her to sabotage the show the way she did. Intentionally or not, the stigma is there forever for the fans and the show.

If the show ends now, life will go on and there are other shows, good shows to fill our evenings, but this has taught this faithful viewer one valuable lesson. Never to get so invested in a show and its characters ever again. I will never watch anything coming from the pen of Amy SP because I don't trust her anymore. I will never watch any show or movie where David Sutcliffe plays a role. (I used to be indifferent to him and his character Christopher, now I loathe the sight of him) and if I find out that Alexis Bledel is the cause for no season 8, I hope she regrets her decision for the rest of her career and I wish her a lot of flops along the way. Lauren Graham should consider herself fortunate to finally star in a long running show, having appeared in so many failed series before. Scott Patterson seems to be the only grateful one for the break that this show has given him and I will always root for him and his career.

hi Noele, wow, those are some really great thoughts and points (enough to make your own blog post). I think one thing we are in agreement in, is that this season the characters weren't behaving like they used to, almost like doppelgangers of the former Gilmore show (I felt like Cylons had taken over).

This is total speculation, but remember when there was a spin off being developed by Amy (Windward Circle) that was turned down by WB? I wonder if that made the Palladinos feel trapped by Gilmore.

The difference is whether or not season 8 would fix things. Personally, I feel the new team made such a hash out of Gilmore that I don't have much faith an eighth would redeem anything.

    Thanks for reading and commenting!

I agree the show is not the same anymore. So if Gilmore Girls get canceled, I honestly won't be crying nor pulling out my hair.

I may be part of a rare group, but I'm a fan of Alexis Bledel and wish her to be happy in whatever she wants to be or to do in her life. She fulfilled her contract with GG and it's note her fault if first the Paladinos and now David Rosenthal decided to crap the show for Luke and Lorelai fans. And if she ends up being responsible for putting a cap in this travesty of a once great show, I'll be more than grateful to her.

If I had to blame someone about how badly the season went, I'd say David Rosenthal or whatever writers took over. I think the Christopher marrying Lorelai and breaking up could have been handled much better and in a more realistic manner.

I can't blame Alexis since who knows what her motivations are, and even if it is kind of selfish, seeing how strangely season eight went, maybe she got sick of the bad writing.

I think the worst of all possible outcomes, would be season eight with no Alexis Bledel. I read some rumor they might try to do the show without her. Yikes.

I don't think Alexis not wanting to sign for another season can be seen as selfish in any way. I remember some rumours in the past about how Sarah Michelle Gellar didn't want to be Buffy anymore and also how Jennifer Aniston didn't want to sign for one more season of Friends. And I never felt like they were selfish. Those are their personal lives after all. Fans rant for a while, but then get over it and move to another show.

RE: "seeing how strangely season [seven] went, maybe she got sick of the bad writing"

That's something I have thought. Alexis Bledel is a very private person and, as was said in some interviews, she is also very shy. So I see her refusal to stay in the show as her silent way to show her dislike of the writing. Her character - Rory - has been very badly written and what some critics have been saying about her are a prove that, aside money, Gilmore Girls has nothing more to offer her.

RE: "I think the worst of all possible outcomes, would be season eight with no Alexis Bledel. I read some rumor they might try to do the show without her."

I read that too. But I wonder if Lauren Graham isn't sick of the bad writing too.

I'm glad I found you guys. I've been really upset at the botch that the writers made out of this great series. The Lorelai-Luke breakup was so depressingly wrong, and Luke acted like such a jerk that when Lorelai went back to Christopher, it was almost a relief. Of course I knew that they writers wouldn't let them live in peace, that they'd have to break them up in some dumb way, and that's exactly what happened. So unrealistic. Made Both of them look like immature idiots. And hey, you can't exactly get married in France over a few days. It takes a long time.... Whatever. The show isn't funny anymore, and it should be put out of its misery. Just give us two weddings at the end of it - Give Lorelai back that dress she wanted, and let Rory and the blonde get married and stop screwing around, that's all I ask. I don't think it's too much. The actors deserved better material, and so if the Palladinos left this mess- and I think they did-- it was not the most ethical or professional way to do it, whatever their beef with the studio. They owed their loyal fans something better, and they didn't deliver. That's wrong.

wow, lots of interesting thoughts here...Gilmore Girls has lost that special place in my heart (and TV viewing timeslot) due to how badly written this season is...you know it's not the actor's fault -- it all worked seamlessly before!

I'm at work (and under a deadline) so I'll have to come back later and read your posts more thoroughly--but one thing I wanted to add is don't forget another career jump--Jared Padendecki (ok let me check that spelling...Padlecki) and Supernatural--I never liked him

Naomi, I think the biggest issue I have with a season eight, is as you say, the writers really made a mess of season 7, so I'm not exactly confident they'd do a better job in season 8.

I will really have to be impressed by these last few episodes in season 8 to be willing to stick with the show for a season 8. Meanwhile I am looking for another show to watch.

Oh Liza you are right, I forgot about Dean (Jared P.) and his show Supernatural, which I don't really watch!

    Sorry...

    • v
Well I understand that season 7 wasn't as good as season 6 but the show must end better than that .... how could they end it just with rory graduating... If she don't want an 8th season the season could still go on

The more I think about it, it would have been better to tell the crew that the show was cancelled BEFORE they filmed the season finale, so they could create an ending with that in mind.

I guess we'll see in two weeks if the season finale works as a show closer as well.

i honestly don't understand how a lot of you could say that, because Gilmore Girls is the best show on the air right now and it has a lot of devoted viewers, like me. SO I HOPE THAT IT DOESN'T GO OFF THE AIR!!!!!!!!!!

i would love for and 8th season, but i agree with some of you guys, that the writing is way out of wack, i love all of the chararcters, but if it is going to be like this, then i just wish logan woulde come back, and luke/lorelia will be married.

    • v
i hope that logan comes back and will tell rory, that he is willing to do the long-distance relationship only if she promises to marry him when she has stabled her life and i cant be more than a year or so.

well i should think that there should be a season eight because it has been really good. I think that Alecis-Bledel sould keep going in that season because she has been relly good with Louren Graham and i think it should keep going with the some people and making it more fun and it has been really good with all the seasons. Alecis-Bledel should keeping going with gilmore girls.

please someone tell me did Amy and Daniel actually leave on their own or did the execs. at CW get rid of them when they bought out WB. after that little deal happpened it seemed that the writing went down hill. I love the girls and cried immensly when it was anncounced, I am a single white female raising a daughter and connected with them personally, but I myself was ready to let it go when the CW took over.
