Blogging By Email In WordPress
This post is arriving at Webomatica via email. I spent some time figuring this out because commenter and friend Emi mentioned public WiFi is hard to come by in Japan.
This is essentially a summation of the information here at WordPress.
The procedure is relatively straightforward. Under Options, Writing, at the bottom is an area for “Post via e-mail”. You have to fill this out with the mail server, login name, and password for an email account you set up.
Since I have a server that’s hosting Webomatica.com, I just went in there are created a new, secret email address and password. When I set that up, I got the mail server and login information that would be needed by WordPress.
You then send an email to that address from wherever. Then you can manually publish the post by loading http://*yourblog*/wp-mail.php.
The next trick is to get this to happen automatically, without you having to tell these posts to publish. That’s where WP-Cron comes in. It’s a plug in that once activated, should tell your WordPress to check the email periodically.
If this post is posted without any intervention on my part, it worked.
The last thing I’ll have to toy with is then just formatting. I put some hyperlinks and my usual tags in this post. I hope they show up.
And yes, they did…
Hey Jason, did you change the format, or is it just me?
Bloglines showed line breaks before, but now the word wrap looks to be working properly.
Hi
TamraTamar, yeah, I noticed those funky line breaks — that was a result of the blogging by email. I still need to work on that.Wow, someone really has a good eye!
I try to be observant.
Speaking of observance, I notice a typo in my name!
AND I NOTICE MY COMMENTS ARE BEING HELD FOR MODERATION!
/caps
Don’t you worry, I’ll be back.
The comments always show up, eventually, even mine…
Fixed the typo by the way…!
I see you’re trying out a CAPTCHA. Was Akismet not doing it for you?
What about Bad Behavior? Or a CAPTCHA at least on this page? There are a few I’ve seen.
I think I have like… three spammy plug ins. maybe there’s confusing each other. Akismet still works great. But I’ve seen a few spammy comments slip through every once in a while so I might have gone overboard with the plug ins. I think I have Bad Behavior on as well.
Say, did you ever try that last email of fixes I sent? adjusting some positioning on your CSS…
Don’t suppose you’d care to give me a little tip as to how you got your email to blog posting, every post breaks up the paragraph every 73 characters.
