Getting Serious With Google Reader
One program I lost when my MacBook hard drive died was NetNewsWire Lite, which had all my RSS feed subscriptions. So I’m resubscribing to all those feeds in Google Reader - to ensure that this blogging tragedy never happens again.
So I’m digging a little deeper into Google Reader than previously. I’m settingg up folders - so far “blogs” “news” and “cats” (of course) and learning the keyboard commands so I can move through all this stuff quickly.
Thank goodness I added a lot of blogs I read in my sidebar and also in MyBlogLog so I have some record of them. I’ve already added 43 feeds and I’m not done yet…
Front Page
Google Reader has really grown on me. One feature I love is being able to display my most recent “shared” items in the sidebar of my blog. It’s a quick and easy way to keep a running link blog of interesting, but off-topic items.
I still love NetNewsWire, but I find I’m using it less and less.
Maybe it’s easier to use something like Google Reader when you’re already using Gmail.
As Safari tends to eat up all of my memory over the course of several days, I try not to do too much in it…or leave it running for long periods of time. So the task of email goes to Mail.app, and feeds go to NetNewsWire.
Does Google Reader integrate well with Gmail? Am trying to introduce people to the idea of using feeds to track web sites and online news, but people seem to think it’s more complicated than it really is.
Firefox seems to run those Google Apps much better than Safari. As for Gmail integration - I haven’t played with that much. The interface is similar. There’s a way to “share” items you find interesting which you can email to other people or display publicly. I think Google Reader can import your feeds from NetNewsWire.
I think it’s worth the effort. I’m up to 62 feeds and it keeps growing. The icing on the cake are some keyboard commands for browsing through feeds.
Feeds are all over the place - all the major newspaper sites have ‘em, even twitter feeds…
