Calvin Klein: R U Technosexual?

March 8th, 2007

TechnologyTime to add another tech term to the list of weblogisms - “technosexual.” Valleywag notes Calvin Klein has come up with a new perfume called CK in2u. This odor is marketed to twenty-something folks who text and MySpace and stuff - one quote from a press release is “She likes how he blogs, her texts turn him on. It’s intense.”

I guess I’m not the target generation (I’m a thirty-something) as this description just makes me laugh. The last time I deliberately put an odor on my body was, well, back when I was twenty something. Plus, in case you haven’t noticed, being target-marketed to annoys the heck out of me.

I’m strangely reminded of the iSmell, a product made by DigiScents (during Web 1.0). It was a computer peripheral that would emit odors when you visited websites. I think at one point they were trying to develop a “snortal” - an odor based web portal. Just load one of those puppies with CK in2u and the problem of technosexuals rarely leaving the monitor glow is solved.

But back to Calvin Klein’s CK in2u. The makers are aware that this isn’t a sure thing:

Trends spread fast among their peers because they are so networked, accustomed to taking cues from what they see online. The Web can give anything - clothing, sneakers, fragrance - a viral aspect. But the Web can also leave anything open to ridicule, exposing marketing ploys, not to mention “technosexuals,” for what they really are.

Anyhow, check out the Calvin Klein trademarked CK in2u social Web 2.0 site, whatareyouin2.com if you feel technosexual and blogging turns you on. They want your money and your content.

Note: I set up a new page called “weblogisms” for all these funny techno-terms (real or invented). I’ll add to it moving forward.
