Digg’s Secret Weapon: Diggnation
I found this article at CNN pretty fascinating. It puts the spotlight on Diggnation, the podcast (video and audio) that goes along with the social news site digg.
The synergy is pretty obvious - Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht yap about tech while drinking beer, talking about the biggest stories that appeared on the digg website that week. But it goes further than that.
Video seems pretty hot on the net right now. I just have to mention (as I have before) that I discovered Diggnation before digg. Meaning, I was looking for something to stick on my Video iPod. I then realized that laid-back program was about some website.
So most obviously, Diggnation the podcast is advertising for digg the website. It also sells Kevin Rose (a digg founder) to the audience. You get a connection to the guy and he comes across as a geek who loves his tech toys rather than just some faceless executive who runs a website. Also, by using Digg to generate topics to cover on Diggnation, the show obviously has a great handle on the tech stuff the niche audience craves.
For all the crap that digg has been getting recently (and despite my shared feeling that diggers certainly provide crass commentary), I still listen to Diggnation weekly and go to the site at least every other day. Feeds from digg are constant sources of entertainment in my feed reader.
Of course, these guys have an unfair advantage because of prior experience with TechTV. So? In business, not everyone starts at the same line.
As more people start looking for entertaining videos to watch online, it seems Revision3, digg, and Diggnation will be there, waiting for them. Is that the real reason why George Lucas is raising a fuss?
