Google Apps: I’m A Cheapskate Home User

February 22nd, 2007

GoogleI’m definitely taking a closer look at the Google Office Apps, for one simple reason: I’m cheap.

The Standard Edition is free. With ads on the email, which I already see.

I recently got a MacBook and am considering getting another iMac as a desktop. Both have Intel chips, therefore ideally I’d buy the new native version of Microsoft Office, whenever it comes out.

But with Google Apps, maybe I don’t need to give MSFT more of my cash.

I already use GMail extensively. It supports POP so I can download all the emails into Apple’s Mail. I don’t need Outlook at home, since I use iCal and Address Book.

All that’s left is the occasional use of Word and Excel. Google Office has Writely and Numbers. Writely looks like it can plug into this blog so I can post from it.

I’ll have to take a closer look at this. I already have a domain name. It might be fun to set up our own Googly portal covered with cat news and email.
