Too Much Entertainment

February 21st, 2007

MoviesSo I moved to a work schedule where I have every Wednesday off. I was hoping to use some of this extra time to focus on blogging, but it’s working out rather strangely. I was pretty productive in the morning (getting caught up on Battlestar Galatica and Gilmore Girls), but come afternoon, I was asleep on the couch with two cats around my head, listening to Radiohead.

I’m looking for something else to occupy my time for a multi-post series. I’m definitely losing steam on Gilmore Girls, my James Bond movie watching has nearly come to an end (I ought to watch the non-canon Casino Royale), and Battlestar Galactica obviously won’t have any new episodes come summer.

For music, I’ll be doing a series on Radiohead which might be more complicated than I initially thought. They have tons of B-sides and singles that I need to cull through. But it’ll be fun; I’m looking forward to it.

But back to television and movies. I was recently lent several series on DVD that I could easily write about. One likely candidate is The Prisoner, a 60s era psychological thriller sci-fi show that had less than twenty episodes. I just watched the first three and I’m hooked.

Another possibility is The Avengers, lent to me by a pal who noticed my Diana Rigg fascination in the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. However, over a hundred episodes is something truly intimidating, so that’s probably out. He also lent us Father Ted which is definitely a hoot, but rather fluffy.

Next, I obviously could re-watch all the Star Trek Original Series (again). I also kind of crapped out on watching all the AFI movies which I should get back to. Or, I could also go back and re-watch all of Battlestar Galactica seasons 1, 2, and the miniseries. Sometimes I wish I weren’t such a completist.

I haven’t even mentioned any of the new shows currently running that I could be watching: Heroes comes to mind.

But writing about fatblogging made me realize I definitely spend too much time at the computer as is. Seeing how I fell asleep on the couch today, sitting through endless hours of television certainly won’t do my body any favors, and ironically, make my Wednesday blogging time even less productive.

So The Prisoner is my next likely choice due to few episodes yet rich in quality - not much fat. So much entertainment, so little time.

You know, you could attempt the original Battlestar Galactica series. It’s at least of manageable length and out on DVD.

Another fun tack might be to go beyond the usual Star Wars vs. Star Trek debate and maybe look at some of the other franchises. Galactica vs. Firefly or maybe do a series on the “lesser” or “forgotten” sci-fi of the 80’s like the *ahem* “phenomenal” V the Final Battle.

Scifi knockoffs would also be fun. Battle Beyond the Stars is always ripe for the picking.

Oh and a series on mockupmentaries might be interesting. The obvious Christopher Guest films would have to be in there, but there have been a bunch of other knockoffs of varying quality.

Finally, a series on movies that accurately depict office life would be great (beyond the ultimate: Office Space). Haiku Tunnel is a great one. I also really liked that In Good Company movie with Dennis Quaid. There really aren’t enough movies that do a good job of depicting cubicle hell…but there must be other gems out there readers would be into.

That is a thought - I did watch the original movie recently (Jane Seymour!) which I got a kick out of. Kind of a Love Boat in Space. It’s sort of funny watching that after knowing the more modern series.

There was also Planet of the Apes and Logan’s Run TV shows that I haven’t seen.

I think I definitely should check out the more obscure stuff than the more popular (Star Trek) since there’s so much better written about those series I woudn’t feel I’d be adding much.

[...] as my meek cry for change, I’ll do it. I’m sitting here, waiting with itchy fingers to watch more entertainment than I have time for, but nobody’s serving up any legitimate options. And until that day comes, I’ll stick [...]
