Battlestar Galactica: A Day In The Life
This episode was kind of “meh,” easily falling in the category of “filler” - but it still held my interest. I enjoyed how it delved deeper into the distant, serious mind of Commander Adama. We finally get to see things from his perspective, not merely in flashback but how his past influences his handling of current events. He’s still thinking about his ex-wife, Caroline, long after their divorce. We got some insight into his past mistakes in the episode Hero, but this show goes much further.
So when Adama looks at Lee, he recalls talking to his wife about their son’s stubbornness, while coming into his own. He sees Roslyn and his wife’s voice is instantly at his ears. This episode also confirms that there’s an unspoken attraction between the woman President and Commander Adama, and he’s resisting, with the “responsibility” card.
I know, my eyes roll over as well, as this is one direction I really don’t want the show to go in. I know all these folks are in close quarters, but seriously, why do various characters need to start hooking up? The Dualla, Apollo, Starbuck, Anders thing is enough for me. But still - Rosyln totally wants Adama. In a future episode, will she be the girl standing there, asking a boy to love him? And what would this mean for the balance of power? Ugh.
Later, as Adama talks to Lee about the past, we see how Adama’s wife could cut through his cold shell, blaming him for their failing marriage: he’s too into his career at the expense of his family. In this one moment, Adama seems really vulnerable despite the silent, steady expression. His wife isn’t impressed with his powerful position, and can lay his fear of failure right in front of him. But this harsh evaluation of his personality obviously affects him in the present. It seems he’s always doubting himself beneath the surface, trying to do the right thing that’s best for everyone as a whole, but knowing he has made serious mistakes that affected the lives of people around him and even himself.
The other half of this episode involved Chief and Callie getting locked in an chamber that was slowly leaking air. Also there is Seelix, a female co-worker, who frankly I never even noticed until this episode.
For some reason, I wasn’t that caught up in their perilous situation. But it was a neat parallel story line of a younger, married couple just starting out while Adama’s marriage is in the past. The rescue was also intense, especially the blown-off part of the Galactica nearly hitting a Raptor during the risky rescue.
Lastly, the question of who’s the Cylon still remains. This episode certainly had much evidence that it isn’t Commander Adama, Rosyln, Chief, or Callie. But the character lurking in the shadows: Seelix, might be a candidate, as suggested by commenter Slap.
