Weekly Poll Results: Which Artist’s Songs Should I Rank?
The results of my first Webomatica poll are in. The question was, “Which artist’s songs should I listen to and rank, next?”
So far, I’ve done two music artist series featuring The Beatles and The Bangles where I listened to their entire recorded repertoire, ranked each song from one to five stars, and then calculated a rating number of each album, thereby coming up with my own personal best album and best song lists. It’s pretty tedious and obviously totally biased to my amateur music listening ability, but it’s fun to apply such a methodical method to music I enjoy.
So with this poll I figured I’d put some of the recording artists I was thinking of tackling next, to a vote. The number of votes are artificially high due to digg users flowing through, but before the digging, Radiohead was already looking to be the winner.
(16 votes) XTC I’ve always loved, and I haven’t listened to their really early stuff in a while.
(70 votes) Radiohead is just awesome. But over time, I’ve had mixed feelings about the last three albums and really want to apply my song by song formula to see if The Bends and OK Computer rank above.
(3 votes) Sam Phillips. An artist that has changed quite a bit - her last two albums were sparseley recorded acoustic affairs.
(4 votes) Crowded House is reuniting, I love them, and they don’t have too many albums.
(2 votes) Michael Penn: I guess he’s a one hit wonder or nobody’s heard of him because he got the least votes.
(4 votes) Liz Phair: She started out totally indie and morphed into an Avril Lavinge clone which is disturbing. But this situation would at least give me a shot at ranting and trying to resist perfectly crafted pop music.
(18 votes) Elvis Costello: Even if I don’t tackle Elvis this time around, I’ll eventually get around to it. His catalog is so insanely formidable, it’s intimidating just thinking about it.
So the winner is: Radiohead.
My next poll is about Battlestar Galactica. I think I’ll leave it up there for a while and see how it changes as the season progresses.
