Weekly Poll Results: Which Artist’s Songs Should I Rank?
The results of my first Webomatica poll are in. The question was, “Which artist’s songs should I listen to and rank, next?”
So far, I’ve done two music artist series featuring The Beatles and The Bangles where I listened to their entire recorded repertoire, ranked each song from one to five stars, and then calculated a rating number of each album, thereby coming up with my own personal best album and best song lists. It’s pretty tedious and obviously totally biased to my amateur music listening ability, but it’s fun to apply such a methodical method to music I enjoy.
So with this poll I figured I’d put some of the recording artists I was thinking of tackling next, to a vote. The number of votes are artificially high due to digg users flowing through, but before the digging, Radiohead was already looking to be the winner.
(16 votes) XTC I’ve always loved, and I haven’t listened to their really early stuff in a while.
(70 votes) Radiohead is just awesome. But over time, I’ve had mixed feelings about the last three albums and really want to apply my song by song formula to see if The Bends and OK Computer rank above.
(3 votes) Sam Phillips. An artist that has changed quite a bit - her last two albums were sparseley recorded acoustic affairs.
(4 votes) Crowded House is reuniting, I love them, and they don’t have too many albums.
(2 votes) Michael Penn: I guess he’s a one hit wonder or nobody’s heard of him because he got the least votes.
(4 votes) Liz Phair: She started out totally indie and morphed into an Avril Lavinge clone which is disturbing. But this situation would at least give me a shot at ranting and trying to resist perfectly crafted pop music.
(18 votes) Elvis Costello: Even if I don’t tackle Elvis this time around, I’ll eventually get around to it. His catalog is so insanely formidable, it’s intimidating just thinking about it.
So the winner is: Radiohead.
My next poll is about Battlestar Galactica. I think I’ll leave it up there for a while and see how it changes as the season progresses.
Front Page
I think your list is also kinda weighted towards groups that had their heyday back in our high school heyday, so radiohead kinda wins by default (though they are good, I’ll grant them that)
As for cylons, it’s Adama dammit! And you know it. It’s just that nobody wants to admit it!
Actually — you know what? I have an alternate theory that nobody has discussed. It’s ridiculous, I know, but what if the freaking Battlestar Galactica (the entire ship itself) was a Cylon? That would be kinda mind-blowing.
Well Dave, the list is weighted to the groups that I have the music for - so yeah it just shows how much an olderster we are or how cheap I am that I don’t want to pony up to buy a ton of music. Like, I don’t have the Rolling Stones albums or Elton John either so I was trying to keep it doable.
Cylons…. man if it is Commander Adama that would be pretty insane. But wait - didn’t they do open heart surgrey on the guy - wouldn’t he be all Cylony inside… and how the heck could he have two kids if he’s a Cylon?
Uh… your theory about the whole ship being a cylon… maybe all the humans are parasites? That is odd - you should explore this theory more on a soapbox in the BSG Fanspot
!
Ok, so this is ridiculous, but the workaround for Adama is that they gave him working human parts for reproduction (basically he’s got live human ammo when it comes to his manbits) — he’s an advanced model. And his heart…well he’s almost a perfect skinjob inside and out.
As for the ship. I dunno, I need to think about it some more. But with some creative license it could work. It would present some serious problems for the show. I mean, if the ship was a cylon, the crew couldn’t very well destroy their biggest weapon against the cylons, could they? Maybe they could rehabilitate the ship? Or maybe the ship is a renegade cylon that has been helping them all along. Alright…now your other readers will think I’m completely off the deep end.
Suffice it to say that if it’s anyone less than Adama that turns out to be a toaster it’ll be something of a “whatever” moment for me.
Oh…and another idea. If the writers really wanted to be cheap about the whole issue, they could just make one of the dead characters a cylon and bring them back for a guest spot or two (I’m thinking of Billy or Kat or Ellen Tigh). It’s a perfect plot device for ressurecting old characters…
Okay man - this is getting off on a tangent. Interesting theories however. Anyhow I kinda don’t know how they can explain Cylons having kids, so (as I mentioned earlier in a different post) that means Bill Adama, Chief, Callie, Helo are out. Starbuck out too because she was having her ovaries harvested. Tigh drinks too much, had sex with Ellen and fought for the resistance. Lee Adama, he gained too much weight plus did Bill Adama raise him from birth or was he switched with a Cylon model at some point?
I’m leaning towards Gaeta, Roslyn, or possibly Dualla the more I think about it.
That whole Galactica being a cylon thing is totally nuts though…!
