Spammy Spam And The Spammers That Spam
So I’m already nearing 2,000 trapped spam comments (I’m at 1,900 something), courtesy of Akismet (the greatest plug in ever). Here’s a nice graph of the ongoing spam wars courtesy of Akismet itself (which I found via Subtraction and Rexblog).
I have to say, out of all these freaking spam comments, I think less than ten have gotten through. It’s a very amusing game, this spam one, as each morning I purge the queue of links to strange sites, mostly pimping drugs and adult stuff. Some have a strange wit about them, as in: “Kewl site! I just looking for this information!” or “Great blog! Check out this link!” - it’s all very flattering but when I see the link is for a pay day loan - delete.
I suppose the next step might be to figure out these IP addresses and start banning the holy ham-spam out of them. But somehow, seeing the number of spams deleted climb into the thousands is sickly satisfying.
Front Page
So far, for me, Akismet has caught 204 spammy comments
So I’m some way off your total… makes a change!
Don’t worry now that you have tempted the spams I’m sure they will find your blog…
The spam caught by Akismet on my personal blog (http://heartfulls.com … sorry, just had to plug
) is 2,930. That’s what Akismet says, anyway. Yeah, I understand the gratification… I thought I was the only person that took spam as a sign that my blog is findable.
Check out the Bad Behavior plug-in. It stops many spambots before they get to your site.

I started 2 blogs last summer. One has Bad Behavior installed and one doesn’t. Even though the one with Bad Behavior gets 10 times the traffic, Akismet has had to block less than half the amount of spam versus the blog without Bad Behavior. 2100 vs. 5000. Pretty darned impressive.
Hmmm I’m thinking bad behavior might have to be fired up in addition to akismet. I noticed the big upsurge after I installed WordPress 2.1.
Joy, I guess in the absence of actual visitors, the spam man will do… or maybe writing about spam is the ticket!
