Another Boring, Egotistical Blog Post About Blogging (And Digg)

February 11th, 2007

BlogsSo Friday and yesterday I slacked off on this blog - had other stuff going on. But I noticed two different dudes submitted two of my posts to digg (thanks) namely, my one about opting out of 2000 bloggers and another from yesterday regarding the You in Social News. I think they’re around 10 or 20 diggs apiece - nothing to write home about, but it was still amusing.

This is kind of shift from how things used to be where I would submit my own crap to digg, reddit, and Shoutwire - usually to no avail. I much prefer this method, because I don’t have to do it, and ulimately, someone else can better decide whether any of my rantings are diggworthy. I’m obviously biased.

Those two posts in particular, are also notable in my mind, because I didn’t write them with the intent of “linkbait.” Meaning, some of my earlier posts like this or this were pretty much written in the hopes of digg love. Maybe this is a sign that I don’t need to do as much blatant sensationalism.

But in a strange feedback loop of events, two of my recent blog posts - the one about Paris Hilton showing up on MyBlogLog and the other about the You in Social News - were news items I first noticed via digg. So I’m taking the extra step now, of subscribing to the upcoming stories feed on Digg and plowing through it for material to write about on this blog (I think I should come up with some crazy Yahoo! Pipe to filter it). I’d like to take a stab at highlighting some new technology news rather than mainly relying on Techmeme for new stuff.

The scary thing, is what if I find one of my own posts submitted by someone else to digg in that feed… and choose to write about it… would the feedback loop in turn destroy my blog? And what would happen to Megite? Will I… destroy… myself (cue Shatnerization module)?

Disclosure: The above reference to “Paris” could be Paris the city, Paris Gellar from Gilmore Girls, ParisLemon the blogger, or Paris Hilton. I have no financial relationship with any of them.
