Tailrank Indexes Webomatica

Webomatica on Tailrank.
Webomatica on Tailrank.

Oh yeah… today is yet another one of those days when I didn’t much feel like blogging a new post, what with the Super Bowl, starting on our taxes, having to go to the dentist (again), and wanting to go to the library — so I was happy to notice that Tailrank, the last blog aggregator I was keeping my eye on, finally noted Webomatica.

In the past month this blog had been picked up by Techmeme and Megite, two other handy blog aggregators. This takes some of the heat off of having to write stuff constantly (although I still seem to do it) for traffic. Of course this added attention has subtly affected what I write about and why — as I feel like I can’t write rants like “Steve Jobs Blows Monkey Chunks” anymore (not that I did anyhow).

My next fun goal is to get more people commenting on this blog. I’ve been pretty happy with an already noticeable increase, but I still get the feeling a lot of commenters are like these ships that pass in the night.

So I updated the comments thingie in the sidebar. If you leave a comment, it now shows a link back to your website. I hope this will add a little more incentive for folks to comment, as the sidebar shows up on all pages of this blog (694 posts!).

Please note that the link has “no follow” on it, so don’t get any spammy ideas. Lastly, Akismet traps pretty much all the spammy comments except a handful that I nuke manually.

Using a fading nofollow would be a great way to encourage commenters.

Basically, if the comment has stayed live for a week or so then they get a real link to their website on their comment.

Spamming won’t be any more of an issue than otherwise… spammers absolutely don’t care about filtering sites based on issues like these. They are completely indiscriminate and lazy.

I wonder how this fading no follow could be automated? Well, something for me to think about… thanks for the link.

Yeah and spam is totally nuts. I think I tempted them about a week ago when I mentioned I was up to 1,000 spam comments killed — I’m already up to 1,500…

Kevin: Cool … I’ve been enjoying Tailrank. Obviously I’m checking it often along with Techmeme and Megite. It will be neat to see what new stuff you have in store for us technology addicts!

  4. Interesting post. I have stumbled and twittered this for my friends. Hope others find it as interesting as I did.
