Just Upgraded to WordPress 2.1
January 27th, 2007
Well, I just took the dive into the future with WordPress 2.1, after a bit of looking-before-leaping. Even as I write this post I’m noticing enhancements all over the place. The box I’m typing these words into has a nice tabbed interface between code and a visual editor.
I did take the extra step of backing everything up and deactivating all the plugs ins before the upgrade. I just activated all the plug ins in the new version and they all seem to be working. I think I’ll look for the most recent versions of all of them just to make sure.
Anyhow, as always with an upgrade of this nature, I’m feeling like the pages load faster. I could totally be imagining things, however.
Kudos to the WordPress team and thanks to all the nice folks who assured me that I wouldn’t destroy this blog by upgrading. I’ll post some additional observations on this upgrade after I play around with it more.
Update 1:
Well, I already noticed something wonky, but it’s not exactly WordPress’s fault. There’s something off about how it’s handling inline styles. Many of my little post graphics I’ve been floating to the left via some div code. For some odd reason it’s shrinking my album image art. It seems to be inserting a <p> tag where it didn’t before. I might have to do what I should have been doing all along which is define that style in the external CSS rather than inline.
Update 2:
Two plug-ins are definitely not working right: one is WP-Amazon, which there is a new one “coming soon”. I use it to add the images and links to Amazon for movie and music reviews.
Second plug-in that seems dicey is WP-cache (listed on this page of plug-ins that aren’t working right). I just disabled it.
Also, in general I’m getting strange “can’t connect to the database” errors every once in a while. Still trying to figure out where that’s coming from…
Update 3:
Just added this Subscribe to Comments plug in if you want to get emailed anytime there’s a new comment on a post you’ve commented on.
Update 4:
WP-Cache has been updated to 2.1: Get it here.
WP Amazon has been updated. I haven’t had good luck with it – I think it’s because I’m on a Mac. But you can try it here.
